TABLE 155.-Per cent of employees in each conjugal condition, by sex, age groups, and general nativity and race-Continued.

[blocks in formation]

Data as to the conjugal condition of 5,409 employees who are 20 years of age or over are included in the above table. Of that total number 42.9 per cent are married, 4 per cent are widowed, and 53.1 per cent are single. The foreign-born show a much larger proportion of married persons than do the native-born of foreign father. Nearly 50 per cent of the foreign-born are married, while only 22 per cent of the native-born of foreign father are in that conjugal condition. Among the foreign-born races the South Italians show the largest proportion of married employees, with the Bohemians and Moravians, Germans, and Hebrews other than Russian following in the order named. The Germans show the largest proportion of widowed employees and the Lithuanians show the smallest proportion.

Among the foreign-born persons between the ages of 20 and 29 the South Italians show the largest proportion married. The Lithuanians show the smallest proportion of married persons in this age group. Where the ages are from 30 to 44 years the Russian Hebrews show the largest proportion of married persons. It is 91.8 per cent, and of that race only 2.6 per cent are widowed. Among the persons who are 45 years of age or over none of the Bohemians and Moravians, South Italians, or Poles are single. None of the other foreign-born races shows a proportion as high as 6 per cent, single. In this age group the Germans show the largest proportion of widowed persons, with the Bohemians and Moravians and the Hebrews other than Russian following in the order named.

The males show a proportion of married persons greater than that shown by the females. Only 21.9 per cent of the latter are married, as compared with 55.9 per cent of the former. For each sex the proportion of married persons is greater among the foreignborn than among the native-born of foreign father. Among the foreign-born males the Germans show the largest proportion of married persons and also the largest proportion of widowed persons. The Lithuanians show the smallest proportion of married males and the Russian Hebrews show the smallest proportion of widowed males. Among the females the South Italians show the largest proportion married. It is 60 per cent. The Russian Hebrews, of whom only 7.9 per cent of the females are married, show the smallest proportion in that conjugal condition. Almost 20 per cent of the German females are widowed, as compared with less than 1 per cent of the Lithuanians.

As regards the location of wives of the foreign-born male employees the following table shows, by race of husband, the per cent of foreign-born husbands who report wife in the United States and per cent who report wife abroad:

TABLE 156.-Per cent of foreign-born husbands who report wife in the United States and per cent who report wife abroad, by race of husband.

(STUDY OF EMPLOYEES.)

[This table includes only races with 40 or more husbands reporting. The total, however, is for all foreignborn.]

[blocks in formation]

A total of 1,571 persons are included in the above table, and of that number 87.9 per cent report wife in this country, while 12.1 per cent report wife abroad. The Bohemians and Moravians show the largest proportions of husbands who report wife in this country. For that race the percentage is 95.3. It is closely followed by the proportion shown by the Germans, 93.4 per cent, and by the percentage shown by the Hebrews other than Russian. The Slovaks show the smallest proportion of husbands who report wife in this country.

The extent to which married males of foreign birth who immigrated without their wives bring them to this country after designated periods of residence is set forth in the table on the following page. It shows by race of husband and by years husband has been in the United States the per cent of foreign-born husbands who report wife abroad.

Among the husbands in the foregoing table who have been in the United States under five years the Poles, with 35.8 per cent, show the largest proportion who report wife abroad; the Russian Hebrews and Germans report proportions almost as large, and the Hebrews other than Russian show the smallest proportion. Among those whose residence in this country has been from five to nine years the Germans show the largest proportion whose wives are abroad. None of the Russian Hebrews whose residence in this country has been for ten or more years report wife abroad. The total column shows that the Russian Hebrews report the largest number of husbands with wives abroad, that the Poles report the next largest proportion, while the Bohemians and Moravians show the smallest proportions

whose wives are abroad.

For the total number of persons, both male and female, visits are more prevalent from the five to nine year period of residence than from any other. Of the total number of persons, 6.5 per cent have made one or more visits abroad. Of those who have been here under five years the proportion is only 4.6 per cent, while for those whose residence has extended from five to nine years the proportion is 8.6 per cent. Among the males of less than five years residence, the South Italians show the largest proportion who have made visits abroad. The Poles show the next largest proportion, while the Germans report none. Almost 30 per cent of the North Italians and

slightly more than 20 per cent of the South Italians whose residence here has been for from five to nine years report visits abroad. Again, in the period of ten or more years' residence, the South Italians show the largest proportion who have made visits abroad. In this period the Poles show the smallest proportion.

None of the German females of less than ten years' residence in this country have made visits abroad, while of those who have lived here for more than that time the proportion is 10 per cent. The North Italians show the largest proportion of females who have made visits abroad in the period of more than five years' residence, but among those who have resided here for less than that number of years the Poles show the largest proportion who have made visits abroad.
