RESOLUTION

Moved by the EARL OF CHICHESTER, and seconded by the LORD BISHOP

OF LONDON:

"THAT it is an object of the highest national importance to provide, that Instruction in the truths and precepts of Christianity should form an essential part of every system of Education intended for the people at large; and that such Instruction should be under the superintendence of the Clergy, and in conformity with the doctrines of the Church of this realm, as the recognised teacher of religion."

SPEECH

ON NATIONAL EDUCATION.

MY LORD ARCHBISHOP,

I HAVE accepted, without the slightest degree of reluctance, the duty imposed upon me of seconding the Reso→ lution which has just been proposed for your acceptance by the Noble Earl who preceded me. I say I have accepted it without the slightest reluctance, because it is, and must be, a subject in which I, individually, feel the deepest and most intense interest, as the Bishop presiding over a diocese containing this vast and densely-peopled Metropolis, in whose streets and alleys there are at this moment wandering thousands of ignorant and neglected children, in danger of perishing eternally for want of those advantages which it is one object of the present Meeting to procure for them in abundance.

My Lord, the Resolution which the Noble Earl has proposed to your Grace and the Meeting, consists of two parts; one of which, I doubt not for an instant, will command the immediate assent of all those who now hear me, and who, being themselves Christians, understand the ends and value of their Christianity: and the other, I persuade myself, will not fail of obtaining the concurrence of an immense majority of those who now listen to me, and who are persuaded in their hearts that Christianity is taught in its greatest purity, and with the most efficient instrumentality, in this
