This work is based on purely scientific principles, by which the student is enabled-through a gradual elimination of English, and while mastering the essentials of the language-to think and express himself first in EnglishSpanish, then in Spanish-English, and finally purely in Spanish: i. e, he masters the Spanish in Spanish. The merits of the work are indisputable, and are already attested by unimpeachable authorities:

"You will find it very useful."-Dr. H. A. Todd, Professor in Columbia College, New York. "It is an extremely interesting and instructive work, and will be of rare value to the students. * * * I will loan it to our library in the Institute."-Dr. F. W. Gunsaulus, President of the Armour Institute, Chicago, Ills.

"If I may say a word on the method, I think that is the way to live one's self into another language, and to learn to master it."-Dr. E. Flugel, Professor in the Leland Stanford Jr. University, California.

"It is well gotten up, and the arrangement and syste seem excellent."--A. J. Moulder, Supt.of Public Schools, San Francisco, California.

Your book seems to me to be based on a sound principle."-W. T Stead, Editor of The Review of Reviews, London, England.

In the first part, all parts of speech are fully treated with the proper syntactical, prosodical and orthographical observations. In the second part, syntax is brought to bear on points not governed by a law common to English and

Following the Autumn and Thanksgiving Cards are the "Indian" and "Hiawatha" sets; also a number of attractive designs for the holidaysbells, stars, Santa Claus. Christmas-tree, holly, etc. Later will come the New Year's Cards, and work appropriate to the Animal Lessons; the Literary Series and the Patriotic Days in February; Easter and the Spring Season.

The entire work of Primary Sewing has been systematized by Miss Cherry, and will be issued later in book form, with special suggestions accompanying the plates. We should be pleased to receive your orders for these designs.

Brander Matthews

ON AMERICAN LITERATURE.

Just Published.

An Introduction
to the Study of

AMERICAN LITERATURE.

By Brander Matthews, Professor
of Literature, Columbia College.
Cloth, Illustrated, $1.00.

An original, authoritative and deeply interesting work by a true artist and scholar, thoroughly acquainted with his subject and with a full knowledge of educational needs. It is a book that every reader of good literature as well as every teacher and student of the subject will welcome. It is excellently illustrated with portraits. views and facsimiles of manuscripts. Mr. Theodore Roosevelt says in The Bookman:

"Mr. Matthews' volume on American Literature is a piece of work as good of its kind as any American scholar has ever had in his hands. Any student of the subject who wishes to do good work hereafter, must not only read Mr. Matthews' book, but must largely

....

adopt Mr. Matthews' way of looking at things. For these simply
written, unpretentious chapters are worth many times as much as
the ponderous tomes which contain what usually passes for criticism
of our literary work, and the principles upon which Mr. Matthews
insists with such quiet force and good taste are those which must be
adopted not only by every student of American writing, but by every
American writer if he is going to do work that is really worth doing.
The Educational Review says: "An Introduction to the Study of
American Literature is written by a man who has a knowledge of
educational needs. It is also the labor of love of a man of letters
who is at the same time a genial humo ist."
