LATITUDE 40° TO 45° NORTH.

The data for the study of the winds of this zone consist of observations made at over a thousand permanent stations on land, for an aggregate period of over 1414 years ; on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for over 24 years, and some reported to the British Board of Trade from the Black Sea. The distribution is as follows:

(Nos. 1 to 10.) Pacific Ocean, east of longitude 180°. Computed from observations for an aggregate period of 1670 days, collected and classificd, from the logs of numerous sailing vessels, at the United States Naval Observatory, under the direction of Captain M. F. Maury, Superintendent.
