REFUSANT LES OFFRES D'UN VIEILLARD.

Ainsi que plusieurs autres peintres hollandais, François Mieris n'a peint que des scènes familières ; mais elles sont rendues avec tant de soin, on y trouve une si grande vérité, eiles sont exécutées avec une telle perfection, que ses tableaux sont fort recherchés.

Celui-ci représente une jeune femme refusant avec dédain les offres d'un vieillard, qui s'était persuadé que celle qu'il aime céderait facilement à la vue d'une bourse pleine d'or.

Ce tableau est très remarquable par l'effet du clair-obscur, et par un coloris des plus brillans; il fait partie de la galerie de Florence, où il fut placé par le grand-duc Cosme III. Ce prince, pendant son séjour en Hollande, avait apprécié le talent de Mieris, qu'il allait voir travailler, et auquel il commanda plusieurs tableaux.

A YOUNG WOMAN

REJECTING THE ADVANCES OF AN OLD MAN.

Francis Mieris, like several other Dutch artists, has painted familiar scenes only; but they are given with so much care; so much truth is found in them; 'they are executed in such perfection, that his pictures are greatly sought after.

This represents a young woman disdainfully refusing the proffers of an old man, who had persuaded himself, that, she whom he loved,'would easily yield at the sight of a purse full of gold.

This picture is very remarkable for the effect of the chiaroscuro, and for a most brilliant colouring. It forms part of the Gallery of Florence, where it was placed by the Grand Duke Cosmo III. This Prince during his residence in Holland, had appreciated the talent of Mieris, whom he used to go to see while working, and of whom he ordered several pictures. It has been engraved by Lavallée.
