Analysis of the English Language. PART I. Grammar; PART II. Etymological Derivations; PART III. Praxis and Examination Papers. By I. PLANT FLEMING, M.A. B.C.L. Crown 8vo. pp. 320, price 5s. cloth.

[October 27, 1869. THIS work is offered as a systematic introduction to the higher works of ANGUS, LATHAM, and MARSH. The aim of the Author is especially to draw attention to the necessity of cultivating method-to pave the way for the study of Logicand to counteract in the mind of the student uncertainty and confusion. Special prominence has therefore been given to Definition and Classification.

The work commences with a large tabular analysis of Language (as the province of Grammar), succeeded by a copious list of definitions. In the subsequent chapters of PART I. this analytic scheme is worked out in detail with brevity and simplicity. In the chapters bearing upon analysis of sentences and Syntax, perspicuity has been chiefly kept in view.

6

The SECOND PART embraces in twenty chapters those words most likely to occur in general reading, such as inflexions,' &c., geographical terms,'' military terms,' ecclesiastical terms,' 'peculiar terms,' and 'words in common use with obscure derivations.' The last chapter contains an account of about 500 words.

The Saxon element has been carefully referred to the authority of BoswORTH and RASK. In other cases the works of WEDGWOOD and RICHARDSON have been mainly consulted. Where the etymology is disputed, two or three of the most plausible conjectures have been offered.

In PART III. to a systematic course of examination questions two series have been appended, to illustrate the tone and requirements of the public competitive examinations. One contains a complete list of all the questions on English Gram

T is well known that in English each of the pecu

liarity constitutes the main difficulty in pronouncing and writing the language with propriety.

The object of the Author is to establish the connexion between the spoken and the written word, i.e. between the orthoepy and the orthography of the English language. To attain this object, words are classified not only according to their derivation, accent, and number of syllables, but also, as far as practicable, according to their vowel-sounds. Upon this plan the whole of the exercises bave been drawn up-the first set for junior students, the second set, from SHAKESPEARE, for those who are more advanced. render the work a complete course of English, the Author has introduced some observations on Quantity and Accent, the Authority of the Poets, English Composition, &c.

A Grammar of Elocution. By JOHN MILLARD, Professor of Elocution in the Royal Polytechnic Institution, London. Fep. 8vo. pp. 110, price 2s. 6d. cloth. [October 4, 1869. Tofocution with such facts and laws as THIS work is an attempt to furnish the student

may enable him to correct and improve his own delivery, or judge of that of others, with the décisive criticism that rests on fixed principles.

Till within the last few years Elocution has been regarded as unteachable, or, if teachable, teachable not by laws founded on an analysis of its constituents, but solely by imitation. This objection is, in the Author's judgment, a tacit denial that there exist in one art laws which, known or unknown, it has in common with every other; and convinced that it is only from a

knowledge of its laws, with a conscious applica-tion of them in practice, that a master of any art derives his superiority and power, he has endeavoured to give practical expression to his conviction by throwing into brief form the facts and laws essential to Elocution.

Prendergast's Mastery Series-New Manual. A Manual of Spanish for Englishmen and of English for Spaniards. By THOMAS PRENDERGAST, late of the Civil Service at Madras; Author of The Mastery of Languages.' 12mo. pp. 142, price 1s. 6d. cloth. [October 2, 1869.

THIS HIS is a method for qualifying beginners to speak genuine Spanish with facility and confidence.

Translated English being an abomination to foreigners, this system excludes it by suppressing the writing of Exercises and the study of Grammar at first. The memory is aided so that nothing that has been mastered can be forgotten. By compressing a great deal of the language into a small compass, this method enables the learner to make the most of a few words and to secure bonâ fide progress every day in speaking. It also develops his command of language by evolving from the sentences in his possession a large number of useful variations, by MASTERING which he obtains a great facility in oral composition, founded upon a familiarity with the syntactical constructions.

New Edition of Dr. ALTHAUS's Work on Medical Electricity.-In December will be published, in One Volume, post 8vo. with a Lithographic Plate and Sixty-two Woodcuts, price 12s. 6d. the Second Edition, revised and for the most part re-written, of A Treatise on Medical Electricity, Theoretical and · Practical, and its Use in the Treatment of Paralysis, Neuralgia, and other Diseases.' By JULIUS ALTHAUS, M.D. Member of the Royal College of Physicians; Fellow of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society; Senior Physician to the Infirmary for Epilepsy and Paralysis. The Second Edition of this work is almost double the size of the First, owing to the accumulation of new facts and discoveries during the interval of ten years which has elapsed since the work originally appeared. The Therapeutical section of the Volume has been entirely revised. When it was first written, hardly anything was known about those striking remedial effects of the continuous galvanic current which are now recognised and well known. Ten years ago galvanism was held in very low professional estimation; reports of cures by electricity were received with an incredulous smile; there was only one hospital (Guy's) where it was regularly used, and there it was administered, in an antiquated fashion, by nurses and dressers. At the present time, nearly every hospital possesses the necessary electrical apparatus; able teachers are instructing students in its scientific application, and the first medical society in the United Kingdom has instituted a committee, composed of some of the most eminent members of the profession, for investigating the therapeutical use of electricity. The change in the scientific aspect of the subject has been equally great. The physiological action of the different forms of electricity has been much more thoroughly studied than it ever was before; their place in therapeuties has not only become better defined, but also considerably enlarged, and based on scientific principles; and the indications for the use of the several agents, comprehended under the name of electricity and galvanism, are much better understood. On these admitted data, the Author has prepared for the press the Second Edition of his 'Work, which had been several years out of print.
