The Preces of Prime and Compline and the Suffrages of Saints at Lauds and Vapers are said on Simples and on Semidoubles which are not days within Octaves. They are not said during Octaves, even if the Office be of Sunday or of a Semidouble.

Within an Octave the Office shall be as upon the Feast Day (except that it shall be Semidouble). Vespers shall be the Second Vespers of the Feast.

An Octave Day shall be observed as an ordinary Double; First Vespers being the same as First Vespers of the Feast Day.

Preface

This translation of the Day Hours from the Monastic Breviary was undertaken several years ago with the intention of providing a permanent Office Book for our Community and with the hope that it might prove a worthy addition to the list of Diurnals already published. In a work of this sort there is no room for either eclecticism or originality. The original text has been carefully followed, with only such changes as were necessary to bring the Office into harmony with the Kalendar of the American Church. In the choice of English, the guiding principles have been as follows: Ist. The Psalter is taken from the Book of Common Prayer as pointed in the St. Dunstan Psalter. 2nd. All other portions of Scripture are in the English of the King James Version. 3rd. The Collects, when not found in the Book of Common Prayer, have been translated and revised after a comparison with translations of the same in other Office Books.

The hymns, almost without exception, are from the translations of the Reverend John Mason Neale, D.D. The Antiphons and Responds, when not in the words of Holy Scripture, are the work of the Reverend G. H. Palmer and the Reverend C. W. Douglas.

THE

HE CEREMONIAL of the Church of to-day is the result of the experience of many centuries; and we are thus led to give great value to any traditions which can show the character of permanence. Similarly, we note that a considerable part of the ceremonial of the Catholic Church is in essentials common to all the divergent rites at present in use in different places; and where customs agree in spite of difference of surroundings, we are again led to give to them special consideration and reverence. It is therefore one of the first principles to be applied throughout all the discussion and settlement of ceremonial, that there is a presumption in favour of that which is old and that which is widespread in the Church.
