The Senate proceeded to the election of Secretary, with the following result:

The President announced that Henry S. Sleeper, of Kalamazoo county, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected to the office of Secretary of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Slocum,

The Senate proceeded to the election of Sergeant-at-Arms, with the following result:

The President announced that Thaddeus Foote, of Kent county, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Peirce,

The Senate proceeded to the election of Engrossing and Enrolling Clerk, with the following result:

The President announced that William Sickels, of Clinton county, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was duly elected Engrossing and Enrolling Clerk of the Senate.

Mr. Rich offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate, the Enrolling and Engrossing Clerk, and the Sergeant-at-Arms, be and they are hereby authorized, each to sppoint one assistant or deputy to

the several offices named: Provided, That the Engrossing and Enrolling Clerk be instructed not to make appointment of deputy until it shall be deemed necessary by the committee on enrolled bills.

Mr. Williams offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That the rules of the last Senate, be adopted as the rules of this Senate, until otherwise ordered, with the exception that the committee on railroads, provided for in Rule 18, shall consist of three instead of five members.

Mr. Thomas offered the following resolution:

Resolved, (the House concurring,) That John Maine, of Barry county, be and is hereby appointed Postmaster.

Mr. Jones moved to amend by striking out the words "John Maine, of Barry county," and inserting in place thereof, "H. N. Lawrence, of Branch county;"

The resolution was laid on the table.

Mr. Boies offered the following concurrent resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, By the Senate, (the House concurring,) That the joint rules of the Senate and House of Representatives, and the rules in joint convention of the last Legislature, be and are hereby adopted as the rules of the present Senate and House, until otherwise ordered.

Mr. Peirce offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That the resident clergymen, pastors of churches in the city of Lansing, be invited to officiate alternately, as Chaplains of the Senate; and the Secretary is hereby directed to communicate to the reverend the clergy, this resolution, and solicit the attendance daily of some one of their number.

Mr. Norris offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That the President of the Senate have authority to appoint five messenger boys; one for himself, and four for the Senate; also one fireman. That the Secretary have authority to appoint one messenger boy.

Mr. Rich offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to order five hundred copies of the daily journals, for the use of the Senate.

The Senate was called to order by the President.

Roll called: a quorum present.

Mr. Bonine offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That the daily sessions of the Senate commence at 10 o'clock A. M., until further ordered.

Mr. Koon offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Resolved, That all journals and refuse papers, accumulating in the Senate, during the session, be preserved by the fireman, and be placed under the charge of the committee on supplies. Mr. A. Smith offered the following resolution:

Resolved, By the Senate, (the House concurring,) That the State Printer be instructed to transmit to each newspaper in the State, and to the Supreme and Circuit Court Judges, one copy each of the journal of the Senate and of the House of Representatives, during the present session.

Mr. Morton moved to amend, by including State Officers; Which amendment was accepted.

Mr. Williams moved to further amend, by including the Clerks of the several counties in the State;

Which amendment was also accepted.

The resolution as amended, was then adopted.

Mr. Williams offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed to wait upon the House of Representatives, and inform that body that the Senate is organized, and ready to proceed to business.
