IMITATION OF THE SAINTS

The righteous shall be had in everlasting

[ocr errors]

remembrance

IMMACULATE Lamb, once slain to take away the sins of the world, Give me Thy Peace, Lord.

O mercifully help me in faith and patience to follow Thy Saints yet on the earth, and those whom Thou hast taken nearer to Thy heavenly habitation. . . . They thought no scorn of that pleasant Land. Patiently they followed Thee, afar off. The servants

were not greater than their Lord. They endured hardness, as Thy good soldiers; greeting with rapture Thy tokens, sweet as keen, O Holy Lord and True; they despised not Thy Cross, they shrank not from Thy mystical sympathy, they were found worthy to receive the greatest blessing Thou hast reserved for those who unfeignedly love Thee, even to enter the communion of a Sorrow to which the world hath seen no like sorrow, to know the fellowship of Thy Sufferings.... Here is the power that hath changed the face of the world, even the power of Thy Cross. This was the

strength of that blessed Company of which the world was not worthy, this gave its ineffable radiance to the Martyr's crown,

this, this only was the glory of that great Apostle, who brought us from Thy outer courts into the inner Sanctuary. . . . Theirs the agonizing strife, Thine, O Lord, is the victory. Thy gentleness hath made them great.

What they believed, I believe also; what they hoped for, I hope for; whither they are arrived, I trust that I by Thy grace shall

come.

Thou hast sought me, most compassionate Redeemer; Thou hast found me; and therefore camest Thou forth. I am Thy purchased possession, Thou hast bought me in Thine own Hour. . . . Living or dying, I am Thine only, for ever, ever Thine,—and because Thou hast mercy in store for all who trust in Thee, I cover mine eyes, and in silence wait for the time of my Redemption.

Unto Thee, O God, is the silence of praise.

THANKSGIVING

Unto Him who hath washed us in His own Blood, be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen

GL

LORY be unto the Man Whom God hath sent to be an Hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest, as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. And His Name is, the Word of God, the Lord our Righteousness. He seeketh the pure in heart, and there is the place of His rest.

Glory be unto God our Saviour, Who bare the sins of many, Who hath turned the shadow of Death into the morning. He bare our griefs, He carried our sorrows; and dear to us are sorrow and suffering for the mighty Master's sake, yea, blessed and radiant with His awful Beauty.

Glory be unto Thee, O Light of the world, for Thy heavenly Doctrine to instruct us, Thy mighty miracles to convince us, Thy perfect Example to guide us.

Glory be unto Thee, O Great High Priest, for Thine all-prevailing Intercession at the right Hand of the Eternal Father.

Glory be unto Thee, O King of Glory,

K

Whose dominion over loving souls shall

never cease.

Glory be unto Thee, O Captain of the Host of the Lord, Who though so very high exalted still dost defend Thine own as with a shield.

Glory be unto Him Who liveth and was dead, and behold, He is alive for evermore.

Glory be unto Thee, O Wisdom of the Father, Who dost deign to hold communion with our simplicity, and to satisfy a desire too great for human utterance, in the Divine Mysteries of Thine Altar. Verily Thou art good unto those that wait for Thee, most loving Lord, to the soul that seeketh Thee. To seek Thee, O God my Saviour, is to desire happiness,-to find Thee is that happiness.

As a King, most mighty Lord, hast Thou given unto me.

Glory be unto Thee, O adorable Master and Lord, for the holy examples of Thy dear Saints. O grant that we may be followers of them, as they were of Thee.

Praise the Lord Jesu, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

DIRECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Co

Stablish me with Thy free Spirit

OME Thou, on viewless wings, O strong and Holy Lord, merciful and gracious Comforter, eternal God, Lord of my life, of Whom so glorious things are spoken, I look for Thee, my soul waiteth for Thee, in Thy Word is my trust.

With Thee is comfort, light, and changeless love unutterable, and in Thy Light have we seen Light, even that Great Prophet. We see Holiness unto the Lord on the Divine brows, Light and Perfection on the Sacred Heart of that Priest for ever, that King, exceeding glorious, brighter than the sun shining in his strength.

And whatsoever in me cometh not to the glory of that Light, bring Thou forth and slay before my Lord. O cleanse Thou the thoughts of my heart, by Thy holy inspiration; and bring them into the obedience of my stainless King. Come to me, O Heavenly sweetness; and let sad memories and dim fears, selfish doubts, vain and evil thoughts, flee from Thy Presence.

My heart is ready, O Lord, my heart is ready, O quicken me as Thou art wont.

O for His sake, Who is and was, my King and Lord, bestow on me the priceless
