CROTON AQUEDUCT DEPARTMENT,

December 31st, 1855.

To the Honorable the Common Council

of the city of New York:

In obedience to the 9th section of the act of 1849, amended in 1850, the Croton Aqueduct Department presents the report of the principle occurrences and transaetions of the past year, with such remarks as the occasion seems to require, and also the statistics of the department.

About two miles below the dam, the aqueduct, supported by embankments, runs over a piece of low ground. In the early spring a leak was discovered by the superintendent of that division, which issued from a fissure in the bottom
