Barentsz as clerk on his 1st and 24 famous voyage to the North, but had no part in the 3d expedition in 1596. As Linschoten left Barentsz in the 1st voya e, near Nova-Zembla, and took another way, the renowned description of that voyage by de Veer, founded on Barentsz' journal, is quite different from this relation. So Linschoten's book is very essential for a The full history of these expeditions. In Bleau's great atlas (edition of 1664) is an ample extract, of 12 large folio pages, from this work. map in Linschoten's book, drawn by W. Barentsz of the route of the voyage, is one of the most interesting and valuable maps of the North. De Bry have given only a very small extract of this voyage in the Petits Voyages, Tom. The larger part of this work is a translation of Olaus Magnus' known book and of no special interest, but so much the more is the small appendix of 14 leaves, which is the first collection of voyages to the North. The author of this excellent description, de Veer, took part in the 2a and 3d voyage; he wrote the account of the 1st voyage on the materials furnished by his intimate friend, the renowned and skilful pilot W. Barentsz, who was present in all the 3 voyages. The Latin text, given by de Bry, Petits Voy. III. pt. 3, is the same as published by Corn. Claesz in 1598 in sm. fol. and made by C. C. A. (Corn. Clusius of Arras); but de Bry have suppressed a great deal of the text, and reduced the 31 plates to 23. Hartgers of Amsterdam, who republished partly in this very year, 1648, the collection Begin en Poortgangh, which he had just issued 2 years before at great expense. This edition of de Veer seems to have had little success, but the publisher's former book: Begin, etc. and also Hartgers' collection appear both to have been sold largely. This edition is not merely a reprint of the 1646 edition of de Veer, with all the additions on Spitzbergen, Hudson, etc. but contains, besides, a tract on 5 diff. manners of sailing to Cathay, translated from: W. This edition, giving the original text of 1598, but without the scientific parts, and in modern Dutch orthography, with 8 fine engravings on wood, was one of the essays to revive or to kindle the spirit of the people for those inimitably fresh and natural tales. The merit of this and other popular editions of Houtman's and Bontekoe's voyages is due to Mr. J. H. v. Lennep in Zeyst. The undertaking failed entirely; the remainder of the edition was bought by the publisher Van Goor at Leiden, who sold them all in a short time, even so that the separate voyages are no more to be had. 2084 The same, in French.
