On the fly-leaf on the 2d and 3d vol. the AUTOGRAPH inscription: Mr. Luzac from his friend John Adams. FIRST AND RARE EDITION. Contains two small maps, the first with a figure and title of America; the article devoted to America and Vespuccius, ignores the name of Columbus. Apian has introduced the name of America on maps, by placing it for the first time on the map designed by him, for Camers, edition of Solinus, in 1520.

woodcuts and revolving diagrams as in the first edition. vellum. 4to. (Harrisse 262.) 20.

Title somewhat stained and with a name in MS.

In addition to the first edition this has some extra astronomical disquisitions by Gemma Frisius, the table of the American islands at the end, and the description of Peru, discovered by the Spaniards in 1530. Besides the figure of the American continent in the first of the two small maps, is altered and improved.

Cosmographia, additis libellis Gemmae Frisii. Antverp. G. Bontius. 1550. Woodcuts, revolving diagrams and folding map. vellum. 4to. Fine copy, original binding with date of 1577. (Harrisse 298.) 35.There are in this edition a few further additions by Gemma Frisius beyond those contained in that of 1540; but the great and essential difference which makes these valuable is the large map of the world, which is not in any of the earlier editions. It gives a very fair representation of South America and the Isthmus; North America being still in a crude and incorrect state. This map shows a wonderful advance in the knowledge of the New World's Geography, beyond what appears in the two smaller maps, which these volumes also have in common with the former editions.
