Ovid relates that the valley of Gargaphia, a solitary spot shaded with pines and cypres trees, was the favourite retreat of the Goddess when she bathed with her nymphs. She was one day there, when Actæon, an intrepid huntsman, unpremedatingly walking there, perceived the naked nymphs, and Diana amongst them, Struck with astonishment, the indiscreet huntsman stopt; but the vindictive Goddess threw some water at him with her hand, saying; « Go now, if thou canst and boast of having seen Diana bathing. » The huntsman was, at the same moment, metamorphosed into a stag: he fled with rapidity, but his own dogs following his steps, he was scon devoured without their knowing him. Le Sueur painted this subject in camayeux, on the vaulted ceiling of the Bathing Room of the Lambert Hotel. It forms the companion to the Bath of Diana and Calisto, already given, no. 575. Ovide raconte que, dans la vallée de Gargaphie, un lieu solitaire, ombragé de pins et de cyprès, était la retraite choisie par la déesse de la chasse pour se baigner avec ses nymphes. Elle s'y trouvait un jour lorsqu'Acteon, chasseur intrépide, se promenant sans dessein, aperçut les nymphes sans vêtemens et Diane au milieu d'elles. Stupéfait d'admiration, l'indiscret chasseur s'arrêta; mais la déesse vindicative lui jeta de l'eau avec la main, en disant : « Va maintenant, si tu le peux, te vanter d'avoir vu Diane daus le bain. » A l'instant même le chasseur fut métamorphosé en cerf; il fuit avec vitesse, mais ses propres chiens suivirent ses traces et le dévorérent bientôt sans le reconnaître. Le Sueur a peint ce sujet en camayeux dans la voûte d'un cabinet de l'hôtel Lambert. Il fait pendant au bain de Diane et Calisto, donné précédemment sous le no. 575. Il a été gravé par Duflos.
