UR ancient Poets fung of Crowds Of Gods that dwelt beyond the (Clouds, And of the Goddeffes they bedded,

As Mortals do their Wives when wedded
Which fliews, that in thofe pious Days,
The World did many Altars raife,
And taught by Post, well as Prieft,
Ador'd the Gods they lik'd the besty

Yet ne'er difputed unto whom
They paid a publick Hecatomb;
Or why one Great Immortal Brother
Was more refpected than another:
But all were mutually agreed
To worship with moft folemn heed,
The Gods of whom they'd greatest
(need.

As Flatterers adore thofe Friends

At Court who beft can serve their Ends,
And cringe to him whofe giving Hand
Has moft Donations at command.
The Ambitious Man apply'd to Jove,
The Am'rous to the God of Love,
The Soldier to victorious Mars,

To keep him fafe from Wounds and Scars
The Poet to Apollo's Shrine,

The Toaper to the God of Wine,
The Whore to Venus, for Gallants,
To cool her Luft and eafe her Wants;

The Hunter and abftemious Maid
Oblations to Diana paid,
And Mariners in all Diftrefs,
Apply'd to Neptune for redress:
A Thousand Deities befide,
And Demi-gods to Gods ally'd,
Were worship'd in the Times of old,.
As were by ancient Authors told:
Nay, fome ador'd, for fundry Reafons,
The Sun,that gives the World itsSeafons,
And to the Moon, that fhines by Night,
Paid equal Homage for her Light;
Whilst others were fuch pious Fools,

To worship even Geefe and Owls;

And without Cavils or Difputes, Oblations made to Birds and Brutes, And with rich coftly Banquets ferv'd Each wooden God themfeves had carv'd:
