Concluding Prayer.

SSIST us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications and prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting salvation; that, among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, they may ever be defended by thy most gracious and ready help; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

After a Journey.

(Adapted from Jer. Taylor, Bp.)

LORD God, Father of mercies, the Fountain of comfort and life and peace, who fillest heaven with thy glory and earth with thy goodness; we give thee most humble and enlarged returns of our glad and thankful hearts,

[blocks in formation]

Praised be the Lord daily, even the Lord that helpeth us, and poureth his benefits upon us. Blessed be the name of his Majesty for ever. Amen and Amen.

Prayer to be used after an escape from danger, whether on a journey or otherwise.

MOST mighty and gracious good God, thy mercy is

over all thy works, but in special manner hath been extended toward us, whom thou hast so powerfully and wonderfully defended. Thou hast shewed us terrible things,

that we might see how powerful and gracious a God thou art: how able and ready to help them that trust in thee. We therefore bless and glorify thy Name, for this thy mercy in saving us, when we were ready to perish. And, we beseech thee, make us as truly sensible now of thy mercy, as we were then of the danger; and give us hearts always ready to express our thankfulness, not only by words, but also by our lives, in being more obedient to thy holy commandments. Continue, we beseech thee, this thy goodness to us, that we, whom thou hast saved, may serve thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

For Absent Members.

(Jer. Taylor, Bp.)

GOD, merciful and gracious, who art every where present, let thy loving mercy and compassion descend upon the heads of thy servants, [the master, mistress, children, &c.] now absent from amongst us; depute thy Holy Angels to guard their persons, thy Holy Spirit to guide their souls, thy Providence to minister to their necessities; let the hand of thy blessing be upon them night and day, sanctify them throughout in their bodies, souls, and spirits, keep them unblameable to the coming of the Lord Jesus, and make them and us to dwell with thee for ever in thy favour, in the light of thy countenance, and in thy glory, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

For a Penitent.

To be used when any having fallen into grievous sin, desires to acknowledge the same, and pray for pardon. ACKNOWLEDGE my transgression, and my sin is ever before me. Ps. li.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, who shewest to them that be in error

the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's religion, that they may eschew those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same: through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Prayer.

LORD God, whose long-suffering is not wearied by our sins, mercifully look upon thy servant, who now confesseth his sins unto thee, in the presence of this thy family. Look down upon him prostrate at thy footstool, and turn his heaviness into joy. Do thou, O Lord, remit, blot out, and pardon whatsoever he hath disobediently committed against thee, either through infirmity or wilful guilt, and purge away all his sins in the most precious blood of thy dear Son. Absolve him, O Lord, with thy word, loose him from his bonds, and deliver him from eternal punishment. Give him by the grace of thy Holy Spirit a broken and a contrite heart, that he may be recovered from the snare of the devil, and enable him henceforth to lead a sober, a righteous, and a godly life, to the glory of thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grace before Meals.

Bless, O God, what thy bounty has provided, for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

Grace after meals.

For these and all his mercies, God's holy Name be blessed and praised, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS AND THANKSGIVINGS

FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

On New Year's Day.
(See also the Feast of the Circumcision, p. 142.)

(Bp. Wilson.)

LESSED be thou, O God, who hast brought us safe to

of those who have time and space for repentance yet given them.

O God, make us truly sensible of this mercy, and give us grace to consider often how short and how uncertain our time is; that there is one year more of a short life passed over our head, and that we are so much nearer eternity, that we may in good earnest think of another life, and be so prepared for it, as that death may not overtake us unawares.

Lord, pardon all our misspent time, and make us more careful and diligent to redeem it for the time to come.

Grant that we may begin this new year with new resolutions of serving thee more faithfully.

Our heart is in thy hands, O God, as well as our time; O make us wise unto salvation, that we may consider in this our day the things that belong to our peace, and pass this and all the years we have yet to live in the comfortable hope of a blessed eternity, for the Lord Jesu's sake. Amen.

Prayer and Thanksgiving for the Holy Scriptures, and a right understanding thereof, which may be used on the 2nd of January, the day on which the English Church commences anew the Old and New Testament and the Apostolic Epistles.

which hast not left thy Church without a rule to interpret them, lest the unwary and unstable should pervert them to their own destruction. Renew, O merciful Lord, a right spirit, a spirit of humility and obedience, that in reading those Sacred Books none may prefer their private fancies before the consentient testimony and belief of the Church Universal in the most ancient times; nor be obstinately perverse against their faithful pastors, who watch for their souls, but that all may readily submit to them, whom he that hears hears thee, and he that despises despises thee. Amen.

A Prayer to be used during a Visitation or Meeting of the Clergy.

(Compiled from forms of Bidding Prayer.)

ALMIGHTY Lord God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Head over all his Church, look down, we pray thee, upon the same, and more especially upon thy servants, our (Fathers and) Pastors, the Bishops and Clergy now assembled together, and inspire their minds so to agree to the benefit and fruit of the Church, that they be not gathered together in vain and without cause. May their labours be sanctified of thee, and they be found good stewards of thy will, that all thy people may be built up in the knowledge of thy truth. And give to all the congregation of Christian people dispersed throughout the world, the assistance of thy Holy Spirit, and purge out of it all schism, error, and heresy, and unite all Christians in one holy bond of faith and charity, so that that happy day may dawn upon us, in which all who do confess his holy name may agree in the truth of his holy word, and live in unity and godly love, and praise him with one heart and mouth, and worship him with one accord, in the beauty of holiness, for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

A Prayer to be used during the sitting of Civil or Criminal Courts in the neighbourhood.

GOD, the supreme Governor of all the earth, look down, we pray thee, upon all who bear rule amongst thy people, and more especially upon those who at this time are appointed to execute justice amongst thy people. Give
