Les personnages sont groupés d'une manière gracieuse et dessinés avec élégance. Rien n'est plus naturel que l'action du petit saint Jean, qui élève la main dans laquelle il tient un oiseau, sa physionomie exprime à la fois la crainte qu'il éprouve pour ce petit oiseau, et le plaisir qu'il ressent à le mettre hors de la portée du chat qui le guette. C'est cette action qui a fait donner au tableau le nom de la Vierge au chat. Ce tableau était fort admiré à Pérouse, lorsqu'il y décorait . le palais de César. Il a été apporté en Angleterre en 1807, et fait maintenant partie du cabinet du Rev. Guillaume Holwelk Carr., à Londres. Il a été gravé par A. Cardon. Haut., 3 pieds 5 pouces; larg., 2 pieds 10 pouces. The works of Frederico Barroccio are held in high estimation in painting; and this charming picture gives a correct opinion of the author's talent. The personages are grouped in a graceful manner, and drawn with elegance. Nothing can be more natural than the action of St. John as he raises his hand, in which he holds a bird: his countenance expresses, both the fear he feels for the bird, and the pleasure he takes in placing it beyond the reach of the cat watching it. It is this incident that has given to the picture, the name of the Virgin and Cat. This picture was much admired at Perouse, when it adorned Cesar's Palace. It was brought to England in 1807, and now forms part of the Rev. William Holwell Carr's Collection, in London. It has been engraved by A Cardon. Height, 3 feet 8 inches; width 3 feet. 1 |
