Scenes had been before used in private theatricals, but Davenant first introduced them on the stage in the above piece. This performance, owing to Cromwell's hatred of the Spaniards, was permitted by him to be acted, though he prohibited all other theatrical performances. Davenant presented some musical pieces before the Restoration, and Pepys, on this account, for some time called Davenant's theatre the Opera.

This play is under some obligation to Shakespeare, and has a scene of considerable length in which the King resigns his crown to the Pope's Legate. Davenport is said to have assisted Shakespeare in the compilation of a play called The History of Henry I., but this has not come down to us.
