Note on the Order of the Minor

Prophets

THE ancient and beautiful collection called 'The Twelve Prophets' (Ecclus. xlix. 10) appears to present some features of a chronological arrangement. The earlier Prophets included in it, as Hosea, Amos, Jonah, and Micah, speak of things as they were in the eighth century B.C. Joel and Obadiah have no such convincing evidence of their date, but may be not improbably assigned to an early period. With Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah we are in the seventh century B.C. Haggai and Zechariah each mention a precise date in the sixth century B.C. (viz. the second year of Darius,' i.e. B.C. 520). The latter portions of the Book of Zechariah, chapters ix.-xi. and xii.-xiv., may perhaps belong (in whole or in part) to an earlier time, and have assumed their present place when the whole collection was arranged. Of the Book attributed to Malachi (viz. my messenger') we do not certainly know the author's name, but the circumstances mentioned in it are those of the fifth century B.C.
