REGULATIONS

HE Astor Building, 40 Lafayette Place, and the Lenox Building, Fifth Avenue and 70th Street, are open daily, excepting on Sundays, Independence Day, Christmas, and New Year, from 9 A. M. until 6 P. M.

The Reading rooms and the Exhibition rooms are free to all persons; but children under the age of fifteen years must be accompanied by an adult.

In the Reading room of each Library Building certain shelves are set apart for books of reference, which readers are allowed to take down and examine at their pleasure. For all other books an application must be made by filling out and signing one of the blanks provided for the purpose.

During the month of August, there were received at the Library by purchase 696 volumes and 214 pamphlets, and by gift 1,019 books and 1,927 pamphlets, and by exchange 524 volumes and 1,487 pamphlets.

There were catalogued 1,725 books and 994 pamphlets, for which purpose 8,115 cards and 662 slips for the printer were written.

The following table shows the number of readers, and the number of volumes consulted, in both the Astor and Lenox Branches of the Library, during the month:

Among the important gifts of the month were the following-from the American Colonization Society, 600 pamphlets; the government of Chili, 10 volumes; Elisha Mitchel Scientific Society, 21 pamphlets; various departments of the French government, 194 volumes and 48 pamphlets; Dr. Frank Donaldson, 24 rare pamphlets relating to Salmon P. Chase; A. Gareau, 6 volumes of early Canadian documents; Leipzig Bureau of Statistics, 9 volumes and 3 pamphlets; City of London, 2 volumes; Alexander Maitland, 105 volumes and 6 pamphlets, all Syriac; Moscow Imperial Archæological Society, 9 volumes and 4 pamphlets; the City of Odessa, 3 volumes and 57 pamphlets; Madame Constance Dunca de Schiau, of Budapest, 3 volumes and 6 pamphlets, in memory of her brother and daughter; Societatea Geografica Romina, 6 volumes, 1 pamphlet; Societa Siciliana, Palermo, 22 pamphlets; Socrates Spiro, Alexandria, 6 volumes and 4 pamphlets, all Egyptian documents; and from 6 County Councils or Committees of England, were received 5 volumes and 38 pamphlets.
