If some unlucky barber notch my hair,
Or if my robes of different length I wear;
If my new vest a tatter'd shirt confess,
You laugh to see such quarrels in my dress:
But if my judgment, with itself at strife,
Should contradict my general course of life;

Float like the tide; now high the building raise;

Now pull it down; nor round nor square can please,

You call it madness of the usual kind,

Nor laugh, nor think trustees should be assign'd.—Horace.

Hesiod and Homer were, I believe, about four hundred years older than myself, and no more: and these are the men who made a Theogony for the Greeks; who gave the gods their appellations, defined their qualities, appointed their honours, and described their forms. As for the poets that are said to have lived before these men, I am of opinion they came after them. Herodotus.

Lay in wisdom as the store for your journey from youth to old age, for it is the most certain possession.

Bias.

Accustom your mind to judge of the proportion or value of things, and do that substantially and not superficially; for, if you observe well, you shall find the logical part of some men's minds good, but the mathematical part nothing worth: that is, they can judge well of the mode of attaining the end, but ill of the value of the end itself; and hence some men fall in love with access to princes; others, with popular fame and applause, supposing they are things of great purchase, when, in many cases, they are but matters of envy, peril, and impediment.

THURSDAY. The fifth' day of the week, 'Dies Jovis,' in French, Le Jeudi, was dedicated to Thor, the Saxon Thunderer. All the knights templars in France are ordered to be arrested, 1307. COLUMBUS. The eleventh evening they ran towards the setting sun, twenty-seven leagues after its fall (six o'clock), at the rate of eleven knots an hour. At ten o'clock Columbus observed a moving light, resembling a torch, anon like a candle. At two in the morning land' was seen from the Pinta by Rodrigo de Triana, and the signal was immediately given. At daylight, a level pleasant island, Guanahani, one of the Lucayos, was descried about two leagues a-head, when the Admiral with all his host struck up the choral hymn, Te Deum Laudamus.' The sound flashed to his two companions, and that heathen air felt for the first time by many a strange repeated stroke its usurpation and dependence, 1492. Bearing the royal standard, he pronounced the sacred word, 'SALVADOR,' when he first kissed the spouse of his perilous quest. How big, how exalted, how divine, were now the viceroy's sensations!

A sole caricature whose trade it is fo exhibit not indeed infamy and folly (for there he can sketch himself), but the sores and by-way infirmities of poor mortality, so as to disgust every good taste and play the mime at Cripplegate, surely in pity should be gifted by Heaven with a pair of hoofs and the baboon's skin. Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships?
Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss.
Oh! thou art fairer than the evening star,
Clad in the beauty of a thousand stars;
Brighter art thou than flaming Jupiter,
When he appear'd to hapless Semele;

More lovely than the monarch of the sky,

In wanton Arethusa's azure arms;

And none but thou shalt be my paramour!---Dr. Faustus.

Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes, and groves,
And ye that on the sands with printless foot
Do chase the ebbing Neptune; by whose aid
(Weak masters though ye be) I have be-dimm'd
The noon-tide sun, call'd forth the mutinous winds,
And 'twixt the green sea and the azur'd vault
Set roaring war: to the dread rattling thunder
Have I given fire, and rifted Jove's stout oak

With his own bolt, by my so potent art.---Prospero.

FRIDAY. This is the 'sixth' day of the week, dedicated by the Saxons to Frea, the Queen of the Gods,' who seems to have united the qualities of the Roman Juno, Venus, and Diana, of blessed memory. Friday,' by the Turks, Indians, and in modern Arabic, is called Juma; by the Persians, Juma, or Adinu, and in ancient Arabic, Aruba. The 'Dies Veneris,' in French, Vendredi, is Friya's Day, in Saxon.
