Let us talk this hour out : on this hour eternity may depend. - Bernard.

The world was created, according to the Septuagint, followed by Julius Africanus (a chronologer, A. D. 220), upon the first of September, 0. S. 5508 years, three months, and twenty-five days (B. C.) before the birth of Christ; and this · Era' which dates its institution from the Syrian dynasty of Alexander's captain Seleucus the Victorious, first of Gorpiæus, B. C. 311, has been used (popularly) by the Greeks and Oriental Christians from A. D. 681; and even by the Russians until the age of the Great Peter. Of the 7337 years which are thus supposed to elapse since the creation, we shall find 3000 of ignorance and darkness; 2000 either fabulous or doubtful; 1000 of ancient history, commencing with the Persian Empire, and the Republics of Rome and Athens ; 1000 from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West to the discovery of America ; and the remaining 337 years will compose the modern state of Europe and mankind.-See 13th September.

The month September' is placed by the Julian Calendar under the dominion of Vulcan, that child of mischief, the dæmon of the storm. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes being usually accompanied with hurricane and tempest invest with an air of truth Virgil's sublime impersonation, as those huge chimneys Etna and Vesuvius may with equal probability be two of the safety-valves of a combustible world. The calends' at Rome was dedicated to Jupiter Maimactes (furiosus), 'black-brow'd and bluff,' who gave his name to the Greek month.

And thou shalt have some cockle bread!
Gently dip, but not too deep,
For fear thou make the golden beard to weep!
