ALPHABET. The origin of writing, or the use of abstract letters, where all profane history must begin, may be dated soon after the dispersion. Sanchoniatho mentions · Isiris,' the brother of Chnaa, who was called the first Phænician, as the inventor of three letters. Cadmus introduced among the Greeks (see Herodotus), A. M. 2549, sixteen Phoenician (Egyptian) characters. Palamides, at the time of the Trojan war, added four, 8, 14, 21, 22: and Simonides, B.C. 500, gave them the remainder, 6, 7, 23, 24. The Hebrew (original) alphabet of twentytwo letters drops the aspirates' Phi' and 'Omega. Aleph (Aur) in ancient Syriac, or the Strangelo dialect, Olaf, the elemental letter, of which the olive is a vegetable emblem, expresses the creative principle, signifying Light. The characters of all the primitive nations varied with their tongues both in number and form, or the design of Provi. dence, which was to prevent a combination in idolatry, would have been directly violated. When the world shall revert again to one speech we may then imagine the extinction of the entire race of Cain, earthquakes, wars, dearth, and pestilence. The first use of “paper-books,” from the bark of the papyrus, or byblos, is attributed by Pliny to Alexander. That instrument of good most probably introduced it among the Greeks. If we can discover the sources' of poetry, music, and geometry, it may be interesting also to look for the foundations of literature.
