JULIUS CESAR arrives at Rome from Utica, celebrates the four-fold triumph in a quadriga of white horses for his victories over the Gauls, over Ptolemy in Egypt, over Pharnaces in Pontus, and over Juba in Africa; entertains the people with naumachian and the pentachlic, or Circensian games during forty days; rewards, and feasts them at 22,000 tables; is declared Consul the fourth time, and created Dictator for ten years; and to place him on the summit of human glory, his statue was erected in the Capitol opposite to that of Jupiter, with the globe at his feet. Cæsar commenced in this year, B. C. 46, his reformation of the calendar, called, from the long intercalation, the year of confusion.

Petronius, in his account of Trimalchio, has preserved a Roman Newspaper (Diurna Acta), for this day : "On the 26th of July thirty boys and forty girls were born at Trimalchio's estate at Cuma. At the same time a slave was put to death for uttering disrespectful words against his lord. The same day a fire broke out in Pompey's gardens, which began in the night, in the steward's apartment."

Edward III. captures the opulent city of Caen, and pillages the country, 1346.-The battle of Hedgecote, and defeat of the Royalists, 1469. Philip is excluded, by edict, from all sovereignty over the Provinces, 1581. Sluys, supported by Leicester, surrenders to the Spanish arms, 1587.

The fall of the city and castle of Bristol to Prince Rupert, 1643. THE surrender of Nicias, the Athenian general, to Gylippus, the Spartan, the twenty-seventh of Carneus (Metagitnion), B. C. 413.—See 12th September. Those Syracusian festivals, called Asinaria, from the river, were annually kept in remembrance of that great day.

NOAH, the Xisuthrus of Berosus, opens the window of the ark, and sends forth a dove and a raven, forty days after the appearance of the mountains. See 18th June. This is near about Old St. Swithin's day; in other words, previously to the change of the style, his party-coloured sail was spread thirty-seven days after the equinox.

The younger Theodosius had exercised the regal power for forty-two years. He was succeeded by his sister, Pulcheria; and the Romans, for the first time, submitted to a female reign. Marcian, her nominal husband, received the purple on the 25th of August, A. D. 450.

The victory of Angora, in Natolia (Roum), 1402. As both generals were alike impatient for action, the plains round that city were the scene of a memorable battle, which has immortalized the glory of Tamerlane, and the shame of the Sultan Bajazet.-See 9th March. The distance from Angora to Smyrna is twenty; to Kiotahia, ten; to Boursa, ten; to Cæsarea, eight; to Sinope, ten; to Nicomedia, nine; and to Constantinople, about twelve miles.

Henry II. of France is inaugurated at Rheims, 1547. The pageant of the two false gates, and the thirteen persons (twelve little girls and a little boy) representing the virtues, was elegant and interesting.

Sir William Cecil (Burleigh) comes to Greenwich from Scotland, 1560; so as he was (to follow the words of his diary) about sixty-three days, having had ₤4 per diem; and for postage, with twenty-two horses from London to Edinburgh, and from thence back to London, £117.

Sir George Somers, the Governor, and crew, land on Bermudas, 1609. They found a huge and curious sort of fish; and having remained there about nine months, and built two cedar barks, they quitted the Isle of Devils, 10th of May, 1610.—The nuptials of the Princess Anne, 1683.
