6 O cleanse me in a Saviour's blood,
Transform me by thy power,
And make me thy belov'd abode,
And let me rove no more.

HYMN

271.

THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER'S UNIFORM.

DRE

RESS uniform the foldiers wear
When duty calls abroad;

Not purchas'd at their coft or care,
But by the Prince bestow'd.

2 CHRIST's foldiers too, if christ-like bred, Have regimental dress;

'Tis linen white, and fac'd with red,:
'Tis CHRIST'S Own righteousness.

3 A rich and fightly robe it is,

And to the foldier dear;

No rofe can learn to blush like this,
Nor lily look fo fair.

4 'Tis wrought by JESU's fkilful hand,
And ting'd with his own blood;
It makes the cherubs gazing ftand
To view this robe of GOD.

5 No art of man can weave this robe,
'Tis of fuch texture fine;

Nor could the wealth of all the globe
By purchase make it mine.

6 'Tis of one piece, and wove throughout;
So curious wove, that none
Can dress up in this feamless coat,
Till JESUS put it on.

7 This vesture never waxeth old,
No fpot thereon can fall;

It makes a foldier brifk and bold,
And dutiful withal.

8 This robe put on me, LORD, each day, And it fhall hide

my fhame Shall make me fight, and fing, and pray, And bless my Captain's name.

HYMN 272.

1

Confirm the hope thy word allows,

Behold us waiting to be fed, Blefs the provision of thy houfe, And fatisfy thy poor with bread. 2 Drawn by thy invitation, Lord, Athirst and hungry we are come: Now from the fulness of thy word, Feaft us, and fend us thankful home."

273.

LIGHT SHINING OUT OF DARKNESS.

GOD

OD moves in a myfterious way,
His wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the fea,
And rides upon the storm.

2 Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up his bright defigns,
And works his fov'reign will.

3. Ye fearful faints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye fo much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In bleffings on your head. -

4 Judge not the LORD by feeble fense,
But truft him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter tafte,
But fweet will be the flower.

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan his work in vain :
GOD is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

I

MOONLIGHT.

THE

HE moon has but a borrow'd light,
A faint and feeble ray;

She owes her beauty to the night,
And hides herself by day.

2 No chearing warmth her beam conveys, Tho' pleafing to behold:

We might upon her brightness gaze
Till we were starv'd with cold.

3 Juft fuch is all the light to man
Which reafon can impart;
It cannot fhew one object plain,
Nor warm the frozen heart.

4 Thus moonlight-views of truth divine
To many fatal prove;
For what avails in gifts to fhine,
Without a spark of love?

5 The gofpel, like the fun at noon,
Affords a glorious light:

Then human reafon's boafted moon
Appears no longer bright.

6 And grace, not only light bestows,
But adds a quick'ning pow'r
The defert bloffoms like the rose,
And fin prevails no more.

[blocks in formation]

Who fain wou'd believe him,
And in your best room
Wou'd gladly receive him,
But fear to presume.

2 Remember one thing,
(O may it fink deep)
Our Shepherd and King'
Cares much for his sheep.
To truft him endeavour
The work is his own:
He makes the believer,
And gives him his crown.

3 Those feeble defires,
Those wishes fo weak,
'Tis JESUS infpires,

And bids you ftill feek. His Spirit will cherish The life he first gave: You never fhall perish, If JESUS can fave. 4 The lambs are preserv'd, Tho' helpless in kind; When lions are starv'd, They nourishment find: Their Shepherd upholds them When faint, in his arms; And feeds them and folds them, And guards them from harms.
