AN EXHIBITIONS N exhibition illustrating the education of women from 300 A. D. to the present time, was opened in the Main Exhibition room of the Library on April 29. It consisted of manuscripts, books, portraits, and needlework from the collection of George A. Plimpton, Esq., of New York City, and was lent to the Library not only for its intrinsic interest but to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening of Barnard College of Columbia University. Mr. Plimpton is the Treasurer of Barnard College and is also President of the Board of Trustees of Amherst College. A private view of the exhibition was held on Tuesday evening, May 25. On the occasion of the visit of the Atlantic fleet to New York Harbor in May, the Art and Prints Division arranged, in room 112 of the Central Building, an exhibition of "Prints and Manuscripts relating to the American Navy." There is a little introductory group of old ships, - Cleopatra's Barge, Roman galleys, war-ships from the Middle Ages to the XVIIth century. Then follows a compact review of the history of the American Navy to the end of the Civil War. Pictures of famous vessels and naval engagements, portraits of noted commanders, as well as manuscript material relating to these officers, or letters written by them, graphically illustrate the story of our naval achievements. John Barry ("father of the American Navy"), Esek Hopkins, John Paul Jones, represent revolutionary events, among which the fight between the Bonhomme Richard and the Serapis is shown in several prints. Stephen Decatur appears in the Tripolitan affair. The War of 1812 recalls Wm. Bainbridge, O. H. Perry, the battle of Lake Erie, the Chesapeake and the Shannon, the Wasp and the Frolic, and the famous Constitution (“Old Ironsides"). Finally, with the Civil War, we come to the introduction of steam, large lithographs showing paddle-wheel steamers, iron-clad rams, monitors, steam frigates. Farragut is prominent, and there are pictures of the Merrimac and the Monitor, the Alabama and the Kearsarge, the attack upon Roanoke Island, and of mortar boats in action on the Mississippi. D ADDITIONS AND USE OF LIBRARY DURING APRIL URING the month of April there were received at the Library 29,849 volumes and 5,954 pamphlets. The total number of readers in the Central Building was 72,127. They consulted 206,378 volumes. Visitors to the building numbered 227,204. MR MR. TOD'S RESIGNATION R. WILLIAM STEWART TOD has resigned his membership in the Board of Trustees. He was elected a member of the Board April 10, 1912, and at the time of his resignation was Chairman of the Finance Committee. THE ASTOR LIBRARY One blessed place midmost the city's roar, Left to his city for a glorious crown toil-won peace, This great remembrance, fashioned by his hand, And daily blessing like God's sunlight free, For those he knew not and could never see.
