EMPLOYMENT. Of the 1,774 convicts remaining in the penitentiaries at the end of the year, September 30, 1891, the following statement exhibits their employment: PENNSYLVANIA INDUSTRIAL REFORMATORY, STATE APPROPRIATION. The state grant to this institution for 1891 and 1892 was $217,565, viz: For salaries, $78,000; insurance, etc., $2,000; railroad track, etc., $7,500; heating, lighting, etc., $12,500; farm, $3,500; library books, etc., $1,600; school books, etc., $1,200; tools and material, $6,000; mechanical instruction, $2,000; extraordinary repairs and betterments, $28,265, and for additional cell house, etc., $75,000. The legislature also provided gratuities to discharged convicts, i. e., to those residing within fifty miles from the institution, each five dollars; over fifty miles, the sum of ten dollars each. RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURES. The receipts for the years 1889 and 1890 were $274,276.17; expenditures for same period, $218,783.28; leaving a balance of $55,492.89 in favor of the institution. Receipts. RECEIVED AND DISCHARGED. On October 1, 1890, there were 332 prisoners in confinement. During the year ending September 30, 1891, 310 prisoners were received, and 195 prisoners paroled and discharged, thus leaving 447 in confinement on September 30, 1891. COUNTY EXHIBIT. The 310 prisoners admitted during the year ending September 30, 1891, were received from the following counties, viz: |
