THE MIDDLE AND UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER OHIO RIVER TO MINNEAPOLIS 1935 COMPILED UNDER DIRECTION OF THE DIVISION ENGINEER UNITED STATES WASHINGTON: 1935 DEFINITIONS The term MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI RIVER refers to the reach between the mouth of the Ohio River near Cairo, Illinois and the mouth of the Missouri River about 15 miles above St. Louis, Missouri. The term UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER refers to the portion above the mouth of the Missouri River. MILEAGE Mileages in this book are measured along the center line of the channel proposed under present projects and are in terms of miles above the Ohio River, the zero of such mileages being the intersection of the thalwegs of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. For the convenience of those who prefer to use miles from Minneapolis, a column of mileages, in terms of miles from Minneapolis, has been added. The zero of miles from Minneapolis is taken as the Northern Pacific Railway Bridge, below the rapids of St. Anthony Falls, Minneapolis, which is 853 miles above the Ohio River. Brown Survey Charts (scale 1 inch = 1,000 feet), made in 19291930, for the reach Grafton to Minneapolis, show mileages along the 1901 channel in terms of miles below the Omaha Railway Bridge, St. Paul. A set of charts (scale 1 inch = 2,000 feet) covering the same reach, Grafton to Minneapolis, made in 1932 by U. S. Engineer Office, Rock Island, based upon the survey of 1929-1930, shows mileages from the Northern Pacific Railway Bridge, Minneapolis, and are measured along the center of the channel proposed under present projects.
