Benas, Modern Law Review 26 (1963) 732, 733 Jacob W. Ehrlich [1900-1971] was a prominent San Francisco trial lawyer and lecturer. His celebrity clients included Errol Flynn, Billie Holiday, James Mason, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac and Howard Hughes. Many believe he was the model for the television lawyer Perry Mason. He was the author of several books, including Ehrlich's Blackstone (1959), an edition of the Commentaries, Criminal Law (1960), A Reasonable Doubt (1964), A Life in My Hands: An Autobiography (1965), and The Lost Art of Cross-Examination (1970). He was the subject of a biography by John Wesley Noble and Bernard Averbuch, Never Plead Guilty: The Story of Jake Ehrlich (1955).
