Letter and Spirit.
ST. MARK xii. 28-30: ST. MATTHEW xxii.
39, 40 : EXODUS XX. 3-17.
AND one of the Scribes . asked Him, Which is the first commandment of all ? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is,
Hear, O Israel; The And the second is like Lord our God is one unto it, Thou shalt love Lord: and thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.
This is the first and great commandment.
On these two commandments hang all the Law.
Thou shalt have none Honour thy father and other gods but Me. thy mother; that thy days
may be long in the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not make to Thou shalt do no murthyself any graven image, der. nor the likeness of any Thou shalt not commit thing that is in heaven adultery. above, or in the earth Thou shalt not steal. beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them : for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love Me, and keep My commandments.
Thou shalt not take the Thou shalt not bear Name of the Lord thy false witness against thy God in vain : for the Lord | neighbour.
