CANote A Directory Of Names, Pennant Numbers and Ship Masters' Association of the Great Lakes Also A List of Vessels of the Other Information of a Miscellaneous TRANSPORTATION LIBRARY April, 1904 COPYRIGHTED 1904 F. B. HIGGIE, GRAND FINANCIAL SECRETARY, ROOM 18, RIALTO BUILDING, CHICAGO Marine Review Print, Cleveland ransportation Library HE A FEW NOTES OF INTRODUCTION TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SHIP MASTERS' ASSOCIATION 565 071 556 10 early enough in the spring. It is satisfactory as to its contents, and the In all the discussion regarding this directory at meetings of the Grand Lodge we hear but one complaint-that the book is not distributed revenue that it brings to us is welcomed on all hands, but every year we have the same complaint about lateness of issue. On this score your secretary can only repeat what other secretaries have said in the past, that the time of issue depends almost entirely upon the efforts of our members in getting advertisements. It seems that no matter how early this work is started from the secretary's office it is certain to drag on each year after all other work connected with the directory is done. Let me repeat. therefore what was said in my annual report to the Grand Lodge: "The annual directory is a most important, and I will say a vital feature in the maintenance of our organization, from the fact that it is the chief source of all the revenue with which the expenses of this Grand Lodge are paid, not forgetting the fact that it also contributes in the matter of paying assessments, and therefore it should be patent to the mind of every member that every dollar collected through the instrumentality of the directory saves the levying of a tax upon themselves to pay just what the revenue of the book pays for them, which fact should stimulate the enthusiasm of every member to make such an effort to secure advertisements as time and circumstances will admit in his case, and to get orders and copy for the advertisements even before the close of navigation if possible." I wish to repeat also two important requests made in previous issues: 1. Please notify the secretary at once of change of address. If you will kindly do this, your mail will reach you promptly, the secretary's work will be lightened and your interests will have proper attention. 2. Your indebtedness to the advertising patrons of this work. We should help those who help us. The Grand Lodge has repeatedly laid stress on this point. Room 18, Rialto Bldg., F.
