I was first introduced to William Wordsworth as a young girl of 10. A small book of his poems was given to me by a teacher of mine -- who ultimately changed the course of my life. Even at that tender age, I was struck with the beauty and the depth of meaning of "The Daffodils." Over the years, as I matured, matriculated from University, traveled the world, and ultimately settled down in a career as an Aerospace Engineer, I began to recognize the need for me to have a private space to escape to regularly (it's called meditation) almost daily. Immediately, "The Daffodils" came to mind. I found this magnificent poem by Wordsworth perfect.
Even to this day, when I want a "reprieve" from the world of the 21st Century, I simply tuck myself away in my den, close my eyes, and begin reciting "I wandered lonely as a cloud..."..and soon I am by that lake, lying on that hill, and watching as the daffodils gently sway in the wind, "...ten thousand came they at a glance...."
The best gift and/or recommendation I could give to anyone, would be the poems of William Wordsworth...and the first one would be "The Daffodils.
