* We meet with instances in the Scriptures which prove that it was the general notion of the authors of those sacred volumes that anger is more peculiarly marked on the nose or nostrils than on any other part of the human countenance. Indeed, the Psalmist says: There went up a smoke out of His nostrils (Ps. xviii. 8). Hence the words and DEN are used for nose or nostrils as well as for anger. In Isaiah xlviii. 9 we find DON, which both Jarchi and Kimchi suppose to be a verb formed of the

אַאֲרִיךְ אַפִּי a nose), and to be parallel with the expression) חֹסֶם Chaldee noun

by which it is preceded in the same verse.
