(Page x, line 6 from the bottom). Take out the mote from thine) טול קיסם מבין עיניך * טול קורה מבין עיניך. eyes.... Take thou out the beam from thine eyes). There are some who read the above passage in the following manner : Take out the mote from thy) טול קיסם מבין שיניך ייטול קורה מבין עיניך. teeth.... Take thou out the beam from thine eyes). However, the reading adopted by the Editor is that quoted by Buxtorf, who, in all probability, has taken it from a copy of the Bab. Talmud superior to the one within the Editor's reach. *As the word : is invariably pronounced by the Jews 27. (See Glossary, p. xxxv. Note), the reason why the letters , 1, 2, when prefixed to that most Sacred Name, should, contrary to the rule of Grammar, receive Pathah instead of Hirick is obvious; for the punctuation of the prefix is assimilated to the punctuation of the Word not as written, but as pronounced. The absence, however, under such circumstances, of the Shevah beneath the letter (which cannot, of course, be quiescent after Pathah) is not so easily accounted for, and must needs be regarded as a mere Masoretic Anomaly. It was not therefore deemed necessary to notice, under the Corrections, the few other instances in which the Shevah may, in similar cases, have been overlooked and retained. |
