MAN'S CHIEF END RELATIVE TO SELF IS TO SECURE A
SAVING INTEREST IN CHRIST AND HIS BENEFITS.

For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.-Job xix. 25.

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.-Isaiah lv. 2, 3.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?-Matthew xvi. 24-26.

Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate : for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.Luke xiii. 23, 24.

Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.-John xxi. 21, 22.

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?—2 Corinthians xiii. 5.

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.-Philippians iii. 8. .

Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.- Peter i. 8, 9.

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall : for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.-2 Peter i. 10, II.

MAN'S CHIEF END RELATIVE TO OTHERS IS TO SEEK AND PROMOTE THEIR SPIRITUAL WELFARE.

And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you come thou with us, and we will do thee good for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel.— Numbers x. 29.

Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.-Psalm lxvi. 16.

Howbeit Jesus suffered him not: but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him and all men did marvel.-Mark v. 19, 20.

And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.—Luke ii. 16-18.

For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?-1 Corinthians vii. 16.

To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.-1 Corinthians ix. 22.

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Philippians ii. 4, 5.

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.-James v. 20.

MASTERS (CHRISTIAN)—THEIR AUTHORITY AND DUTIES IN General, UndER GOD AND OVER SERVANTS.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.-Exodus xx. 9, 10.

And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you. And they answered him, The Lord bless thee.-Ruth ii. 4.

If I did despise the cause of my manservant, or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; what then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?Job xxxi. 13, 14.

Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.-Psalm ci. 6, 7.

She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.—Proverbs xxxi. 13-15.

I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruits: I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees: I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me.-Ecclesiastes ii. 5-7.

Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work.—Jeremiah xxii. 13.

And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.—Matthew viii. 5, 6.

And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.—Ephesians vi. 9.

Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.-Colossians iv. 1.

MASTERS ARE ENTITLED TO RESPECT, OBEDIENCE AND
FAITHFULNESS FROM CHRISTIAN SERVANTS.

And he said, O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.-Genesis xxiv. 12.

And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to 'prosper in his hand. And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.— Genesis xxxix. 3, 4.

And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel.—2 Kings

v. 2-4.

For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.—Matt. viii. 9.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much : and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.-Luke xvi. 10.

And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; and when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.-Acts x. 7, 8.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.—Eph. vi. 5,6.

Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.-Colossians iii. 22, 23.

Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.—Titus ii. 9, 10.

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.-1 Peter ii. 18.

MEANS OF GRACE ARE NECESSARY TO WIN SINNERS TO THE

FAVOUR OF GOD.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.-Psalm li. 12, 13.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.-Proverbs xi. 30.

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.-Écclesiastes xi. 6.

When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.-Ezekiel xxxiii. 8, 9.

Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few : pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.-Luke x. 2.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.-Luke xiv. 23.

And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.-Acts xiv. I.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent ? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things !—Romans x. 13-15.

For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.-1 Corinthians iv. 15.

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.-2 Timothy ii. 25.
