THE DEAD CHRIST.

The body of Jesus Christ, taken down from the cross, is supported on the Virgin's knees, who is near fainting, and sustained by St. John. She is also accompanied by Mary Magdalen, who is seated at the Saviour's feet. In the back-ground ap pears the foot of the cross, against wich leans a ladder from whence Joseph of Arithmea has just descended.

This valuable picture was painted for the benedictine convent of St. John at Parma; and engraved by Rosaspina of Bologna. When that able engraver wished to have a sketch of it done by a designer of Savignano named Joseph Turchi, urgent letters of recommendation having been given him by the benedictines, he obtained every possible facility; the picture was taken down, and placed in a particular room where the draftsman could work at his ease; the picture, however, becoming detached from the frame, fell out on the back of a chair, and the canvass was torn at the Virgin's hand. This accident so affected the unfortunate draftsman that he lost his senses, and died of grief in that state a few months after.
