"Jack Frost" (p. 26) is from Pippa was a little Italian, one of the work-girls in a silk mill at Asolo, near Florence. One day she took a long holiday, and passed singing through the white town; and as she sang, certain persons heard her and were never quite the same afterwards. This was one of Pippa's songs. The story of that day is told in a play by Robert Browning, called Pippa Passes, from which the song is taken. |
