It amazes me that this book is not still a part of high school curriculum. It may be true that the practice of law is no longer based upon a concept of "natural law". That doesn't mean that an understanding of natural law, as it has been understood over the ages and studied as "moral philosophy" is no longer of great use to society. Indeed, its absence is felt profoundly in the "dumbing down" of this present generation. Armed with the truths pointed to in the writings that Torrey has collected and caused to be printed in "The Moral Instructor, and Guide to Virtue...", people are more likely to find personal happiness as well as contribute to the happiness and well-being of society in general. This book ought to be among a list of 100 "must read" classics for those seeking to rediscover our lost culture.
