Having no information of later date than that contained in the Census of 1850 (p. cxxxiii. supra) respecting the "Public School," "District," and Township" Libraries, I have not included them in this Statistical Table. Many of them are itinerating collections. It is obvious, therefore, that in this case, especially, wear and tear will considerably affect the numbers from time to time, as well as the ordinary contingencies of increase or loss. The careful revision and reprinting of Mr. Jewett's Report of 1849 has been for several years promised by the Smithsonian functionaries, and is much to be desired. EDWARD EDWARDS.
