The North American Review, the oldest and most prosperous of the American Reviews, was established in 1815, and writing its history is almost writing the history of the Literature of the United States. Its Founder was William Tudor, who, after the lapse of two years, relinquished his proprietaryship to Wilhert Philips, or rather to the Anthologia Club, which had been reconstituted under the name of the North American Club, and the most active members of which were Sparks, Channing, and Richard H. Dana. In 1820, the chief Editorship devolved upon Mr. Edward Everett, who, in the course of about four years, alone contributed nearly fifty Articles. In 1823, when Mr. Everett was elected a Member of Congress for Massachusetts, he resigned the editorship to Jared Sparks, but still continued for nearly ten years one of the most active contributors, the articles contributed by him during this period amounting to about sixty. Mr. Jared Sparks was, in 1829, followed in the editorship of the Review by Alexander Everett, the elder brother of Edward Everett. Alexander Everett continued chief editor until 1835, when Dr. Palfrey undertook the management, which he continued until 1842, when it passed into the hands of Mr. Francis Bowen, the present editor. Besides Jared Sparks and the two Everetts, almost all the prominent writers of the United States have contributed to the North American Review. Among them Joseph Story, Henry Wheaton, Daniel Webster, the Historians Prescott and Bancroft. Cullen Bryant's first Poem, Thanatopsis, appeared in its columns. Its Literary Criticisms emanated chiefly from the pens of Richard H. Dana, Longfellow, Dr. Cheeve, and Whipple. Eminent service was in its columns rendered to philosophical studies by the pens of James Marsh, Orestes Brownson, Dr. Walker, Theodore Parker, W. R. Greene, and Francis Bowen.
