PREFACE.

THIS treatise grew up in the class-room out of the attempt to simplify, for the author's students, the statements to which they were introduced in the best logical text-books that were available, ten years ago, for purposes of instruction. Three years since it was privately printed; and, that edition being exhausted, the author gives his treatise to the public because teachers whose opinion he values have assured him that they wish to make use of it with their classes. Originality and completeness are not claimed for the work. If it possesses any excellences they are simplicity, compactness, and practical adaptation to the wants of the average American student in college and high-school.

The work is (as the author conceives that every textbook should be) a mere outline, designed to be amplified and illustrated, at every point, by the living teacher. The frequent references given to other logical treatises will, however, supply illustrative material of the very best quality to teacher or pupil who carefully consults them.

Brief as the work is, the author has been accustomed to require his classes to memorize only the leaded matter

contained in the volume; although considerable attention is given, in the way of class-room discussion, to the somewhat extra-logical matter that is set solid. The entire work was constructed with a view to making the study of Logic practically valuable, and it will, perhaps, yield the best results if approached in a somewhat utilitarian spirit.
