will beget in himself, Devotion, a Watchfulness against Sin, the Fear of God, a Dread of Hell Torments, and a Longing after the Joys of Heaven. And whofoever duly confiders these things, will undoubtedly take Care to prepare himself for the World to come: For, by thinking on that laft Day, wherein the whole World fhall be judged, he will be mindful to make himself ready for the Account which he must then give, of all his Thoughts, Words, and Actions. The Thoughts of Hell, will quicken his Endeavours to avoid it; and the Confideration of Heaven, muft excite his utmost Earneftness to attain its Joys.

QUEST. CXXIV.

What is the twelfth Article of the Faith?

ANSWER.

And the Life of the World to come.

QUEST. CXXV.

What doth the Church teach us in this Article of the Faith?

ANSWER.

That in the World to come, the Grace and Bleffing of God fhall be given unto the Elect; and Life eternal, filled with Joy and fpiritual Delights: As the holy Scripture teftifieth, (1 Cor. ii. 9.) Eye hath not feen, nor Ear beard, neither have entered into the Heart of Man, the Things which God hath prepared for them that love him. And again, to the fame Effect, (Rom. xiv. 17.) The Kingdom of God is not Meat and Drink, but Righteoufnefs and Peace, and Joy in the Holy Ghoft. QUEST.

QUEST. CXXVI.

Shall the Soul, only, or fhall the Body, alfo, together with the Soul, enjoy eternal Happiness ?

ANSWER.

As the Soul and Body, jointly, did good Works for the Hope of eternal Rewards, even fo fhall they, jointly, and not feparately, receive and enjoy the fame triumphant Happiness and Felicity. For the Joy of the Soul, and of the Body, are not diftinct and different things, but the same; and, therefore, as the Body fhall be glorified, fo the whole Man, both Soul and Body, shall be made glorious; and shall be made like the Angels, and equal unto them. According to the Scripture, which faith, (Matth. xxii. 30.) In the Refurrection they neither marry, nor are given in Marriage, but are as the Angels of God in Heaven. The Body fhall be glorious, immortal, incorruptible, not needing Meat or Drink; and the Soul fhall be the fame: As faith the Scripture, (1 Cor. xv. 52.) The Dead fhall be raised, incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this Corruptible must put ́on Incorruption, and this Mortal must put on Immortality. Now this Joy and Felicity will confift in contemplating the moft bleffed Trinity, and in bearing a delightful Part in the spiritual Harmony of the angelical Chorus. According to the Apostle, (1 Cor. xiii. 12.) Now, we fee as through a Glass, darkly; but then, Face to Face: Now, I know in part; but then, fhall I know, even as alfo I am

known.

Now whereas the Lord faid unto Mofes, (Exod. xxiii. 20.) There shall no Man fee my Face, and live. This is to be understood of this present Life, and of this corruptible Body, not as yet glorified; and before that ultimate and most perfect Redemption. But after that compleat Glorification, in the future and eternal Life, after the Day of Judgment, GOD will fo cloath us with Light, that we shall be able to behold the Light of God. According to the Pfalmift, (Pfal. xxxvi. 9.) With thee is the Fountain of Life, and in thy Light fhall we fee Light. And this Light, as it fhall be plainly and fully beheld, will entirely fatisfy us, and gratify, to the utmoft, all our Defires of Wisdom and Beauty. For all Good is contained in the Contemplation and Poffeffion of the fupreme Good; and the Perfection of Happiness, in the compleat Enjoyment of it: As the divine Pfalmift declareth. (Pfal. xvii. 16.) When I awake up after thy Likeness, I fhall be fatisfied with it.

HOPE, is a true Confidence in God, bestowed on the Heart of Man, by the divine Enlightening and Infpiration; that he might never defpair of God's Grace and Favour in granting his Petitions, whether they be for Pardon of his Sins, or for any other spiritual or temporal Good. Concerning which, the Apoftlé fayeth thus, Heb. x. 35.) Caft not away, therefore, your Confidence, which hath great Recompence of Reward. And elsewhere, (Rom. viii. 24.) We are faved by Hope; but Hope that is feen, is not Hope; for what a Man feeth, why doth be yet hope for? But if we hope for that we fee not, then do we, through Patience, wait for it.

QUEST.

[blocks in formation]

Whence have we this fure and certain Hope?
ANSWER.

All our Hope is the Lord Jefus Chrift; as the Apoftle fayeth, (1 Tim. i. 1.) By the Commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jefus Chrift, which is our Hope. Because from him we receive all things; as Chrift himfelf teacheth, (John xiv. 13.) Whatfoever ye shall afk in my Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Now hereby is to be underftood the divine Grace; for by Jefus Chrift, both Grace and Truth were given unro us: According to the blessed Scripture. (Johni. 17.) For the Law was given by Mofes, but Grace and Truth by Jefus Chrift. And in this Grace is all our Hope founded. We, also, place great Confidence in the Obfervance of God's Commands; feeing Chrift hath faid, (John xiv. 21.) He that hath my Commandments, and keepeth them, be it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me, fhall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifeft myself unto him. Moreover, our Hope is confirmed by the Communion of the aweful and moft holy Myfteries; namely, of the Body and Blood of Chrift; whereby the Lord himself doth dwell in us: As himself teftifies. (John vi. 56.) He that eateth my Flesh, and drinketh my Blood, dwelleth in me, and 1 in him. Laftly, Our Faith is established by conftant Prayer. As we are taught by the Apoftle, (James v. 13.) Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. And another Apoftle
