L.M.-Christ our Erample in Prayer. 1 WHEN Jesus dwelt in feeble clay, Prayer was his solace and delight; 'Twas thus he spent the busy day, And still employ'd the silent night. 2 Oppress’d with sorrows, not his own, But laden with our guilt and grief, And there he sought and found relief. 3 Each fleeting hour he pass'd away In sweet communion with his God; Oh! let us learn of him to pray, And tread the path which Jesus trod. 409. C.M.- What is Prayer ? Utter'd or unexpress’d; That trembles in the breast. 2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh, The falling of a tear; When none but God is near. That infant lips can try; The Majesty on high. The Christian's native air; He enters heaven with prayer. Returning from his ways; And cry, “ Behold he prays." 6 The saints in prayer appear as one, In word, and deed, and mind, When with the Father and his Son Sweet fellowship they find. The Holy Spirit pleads, For mourners intercedes. The life, the truth, the way! Lord, teach us how to pray. 410. L.M.- The House of Prayer. O Lord, thy dwelling-place secure! And leave the consecrated door. 2 Devoted as it is to thee, A thievish swarm frequents the place; They steal away my joys from me, And rob my Saviour of his praise. 3 There too a sharp designing trade, Sin, Satan, and the world maintain; To part with ease and purchase pain. 4 I know them, and I hate their din, Am weary of the bustling crowd; I cannot serve thee as I would. In coming to a mercy seat! prayer, But wishes to be often there. 2 Prayer makes the darken’d cloud withdraw; Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw; Brings every blessing from above. Prayer makes the Christian's armour bright; And Satan trembles when he sees The weakest saint upon his knees. 4 While Moses stood with arms spread wide, Success was found on Israel's side; That moment Amalek prevail'd. Words flow apace when you complain, With the sad tale of all your care. To heaven in supplication sent, 412. Sing ye the Lord Jehovah's praise; 2 Blest be that name, supremely blest, From the sun's rising to its rest; Through all the earth his goodness shown. 3 Who is like God?—so great, so high, He bows himself to view the sky, Looks down upon the human race. 4 He hears the uncomplaining moan Of those who sit and weep alone; And saves the poor in him that trust. 5 Servants of God, in joyful lays Sing ye the Lord Jehovah's praise; for evermore. 413.
