QUESTIONS

ON

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES.

DIRECTIONS.

1. THE questions generally relate to those parts of the narrative which most require attention; 'other questions, which may be necessary to preserve the connection, can easily be supplied.

2. Questions on phrases, &c., of frequent occurrence, and those which have already been repeatedly asked in the "Questions on the Ministry," are not given uniformly. It will be well, however, to recur to them from time to time.

3. The teacher is expected to use the map at recitations, and trace the travels of the Apostles, &c.

4. In addition to the books recommended in the "Questions on the Ministry," Paley's" Hora Paulinæ," and Milman's "History of Christianmay be consulted. Every teacher should, at least, have at hand Livermore's "Commentary."

ity,"

CHAPTER I.

WHY is this book called the "Acts," &c.? By whom, when, and for what purpose, was it written? To whom was it addressed? What are its principal contents? Of what value is it to us? What work is referred to as "the former trea

tise"? What is meant by "was taken up,"

-"commandments," "Apostles,"·

Holy Ghost," "passion,' -"kingdom of God"? An account of what event is left out in this work, and why is it omitted here? What is meant by "when they were come in"? Who were the persons who abode there? In what did they continue with "one accord"? What is meant by "those days"? Why did Peter, rather than any other Apostle, stand up, and speak? Was it like Peter to be foremost? What was the object of Peter's speech? What passages in the Old Testament are referred to as "this Scripture"? As a "witness to what, did Peter say another Apostle must be chosen in the place of Judas? What two were appointed as candidates? Which of them was chosen, and how?

The Teacher will explain the character, design, and use of this history, the manner in which passages from the Old Testament were applied to Christ, and quoted as prophetic of the events in his ministry. He may also review the facts recorded in regard to the resurrection and ascension of Jesus; and likewise notice the fact, that the choice of Matthias by lot was not by command.

The Teacher may speak of the change wrought in the faith, views, and characters of the Apostles by the resurrection of their Master, and show how it goes to prove that fact. He may also remark upon the naturalness of Peter's course, and its consistency with all record concerning him in the Gospels.

CHAPTER II.

WHAT is meant by "when the day of Pentecost," &c.? Describe what took place on the day of Pentecost? What do you understand by "the Spirit"? Why were the multitude

-

"amazed"? Who were intended by "proselytes"? Where were the several countries, natives of which are said to have been present? What did those who mocked say of the Apostles? Who delivered a discourse? What prophet did he quote? Give an outline of Peter's speech. What was it designed to prove, the resurrection of Jesus and that he fulfilled what the Jews believed to be prophecies of the Messiah? What was the effect of this speech? What was meant by "pricked in their heart"? What was implied in Peter's direction, "Repent," &c.? What was meant by "the promise," "all that are afar off," 66 our God shall call "? What did Peter mean by "Save yourselves," &c.? How many were added to the Christian community? How did they "continue"? What is meant by those who believed having "all things in common," &c.? and why was this necessary, -on account of their liability to persecution? What is said to show the steadfastness of the believers? Did the number of believers increase? What do you understand by "the church,". "saved"?

The Teacher will show the adaptation of Peter's discourse to convince Jewish hearers; explain the quotations from the Old Testament, the rite of baptism, the term Church,

and the exposed condition of the disciples.

The Teacher may speak of the devotion, union, harmony, and singleness of heart of the first believers; and show how they acted as those under the power of a new faith.

CHAPTER III.

DID Peter and John conform to the Jewish worship? Who was healed, and in whose name did Peter profess to heal What was meant by " In the name of," &c.? How

him?
