Professor of Astronomy, vacant by the resignation of the Rev. G. H. S. Johnson.

The Rev. H. D. Liddell, of Christ Church, has been appointed a trustee of Lord Crewe's charities.

May 7.-In a Congregation holden yesterday, William Fishburn Donkin, M.A., Fellow of University College, (who was on the 3rd inst. nominated by the electors appointed by Sir Henry Savile, to the Professorship of Astronomy, vacant by the resignation of the Rev. An intimation having been received from the Lord Bishop of Carlisle that the Perpetual Curacy of Holme Cultram, in the county of Cumberland, is void by the resignation of the Rev. R. Collinson, M.A., the Vice-Chancellor informs members of Convocation that some day in next term will be fixed for the election of a successor to Mr. Collinson.

May 14.-The new statute, De Disciplinæ Theologica, was submitted for the approbation of convocation on Thursday last, and carried. The numbers were-for the statute, 59; against it, 26.

In a Congregation holden last week, W. F. Donkin, M.A., Fellow of University College, was admitted to the Savilian Professorship of Astronomy.

May 21.-On Wednesday last, Mr. John F. B. Blackett, and Mr. Pollen of Christ Church, were elected Fellows of Merton College.

May 23.-This day Samuel William Wayte, B.A., and Scholar of Trinity College, was elected and admitted Probationary Fellow of Trinity College; Henry Musgrave Wilkins, Blount Scholar of

Trinity, was elected and admitted a Scholar on the old foundation of the same Society; and William George Tupper (from Winchester School) was elected Blount Scholar.

The examination for a Pusey and Ellerton Hebrew Scholarship is fixed for Friday, June 3rd. Candidates must not have exceeded twenty-five years of age, and are to call on the Regius Professor of Hebrew on or before June 1st.

By the provisions of the Theological Statute recently passed at Oxford, Dr. Hampden, Regius Professor of Divinity, has been constituted chairman of the New Theological Board; and is also recognized as a Public University Professor in Dogmatic Theology.

CAMBRIDGE.

April 23.-A pension of 1001. has been granted to the Rev. Thomas Kidd, M.A. of Trinity College, in this university, in consideration of services in the advancement of learning, as the editor and publisher of various works of classical literature.

May 7.-On Saturday last the Norrisian Prize for the year 1842 was adjudged to Leopold Poynder, B.A., of Trinity College-subject "The Apostolical Epistles afford internal evidence that the persons to whom they were severally addressed had already been made acquainted with the great truths which those Epistles inculcate."

The installation of the Duke of Northumberland as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge is fixed for Monday, the 4th of July. The Duke of Wellington has accepted an invitation to be present. We regret to announce that his Royal Highness Prince Albert will not be present in Cambridge.

May 11.-At a Congregation holden this day, to confirm the Report of the Theological Syndicate, it was adopted by a majority of 58 to 25 in the Senior House, and 52 to 19, in the junior.

INCORPORATED SOCIETY FOR
PROMOTING THE ENLARGE-
MENT, BUILDING, AND RE-
PAIRING OF CHURCHES AND
CHAPELS.

A meeting of the Committee of this Society was held at their chambers, St. Martin's-place, on Monday the 18th April, 1842. His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury in the chair.

Grants were voted towards building a church at Byers Green, in the parish of St. Andrew Auckland, Durham; building a church at Walmby, in the parish of Sutton Coldfield, Warwick; building a chapel at Elmore Green, in the parish of Motcombe, Dorset; building a chapel at Fernall Heath, in the parish of Claines, Worcester; building a chapel at Upper Tean, in the parish of Checkley, Stafford; building a chapel at Newton, in the parish of Clodock, Hereford; repewing the church at Swepstone, Leicester; enlarging by rebuilding the chapel at Boddicott, Oxon; enlarging and repewing the church at Exhall, Warwick; repewing the church at Bruton, Somerset; repewing the church at Measham, Derby; enlarging the church at Davenham, Chester; repewing and erecting a gallery in the church at Riseby, Beds.; enlarging by rebuilding the church MAY, 1842.

at Arlingbury, Northampton; rebuilding the chapel at Tibberton, Salop; enlarging the church at Steeple Claydon, Bucks;

BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE

SOCIETY.

This Society held their annual meeting at Exeter Hall on the 4th of May. Lord Bexley in the chair, supported by the Bishops of Chichester, Chester, Peterborough, Winchester, and Norwich; and Lords Cholmondeley, Harrowby, Chichester, Teignmouth, and Glenelg; Chevalier Bunsen, Sir T. D. Acland, the Dean of Salisbury, &c. The Report stated that during the year 146,000 Bibles had been distributed in France, making a total since 1820 of 1,692,659. At Frankfort, 42,914 copies had been distributed. The German Bible Society had issued 100,000 copies annually. In five years, 54,500 Bibles, in the German, Hungarian, and Bohemian languages, had been distributed. Brussels had issued 9,750, making a total since 1835 of 97,332. In St. Petersburgh 11,754 had been distributed. Stockholm, 5,364 Bibles, and 15,302 Testaments. The Swedish Bible Society have issued during the year 14,000, and since the commence3 F
