der The General Assembly convened at Providence, on the second Monday in January, 1864, (being the 11th,) in conformity with the provisions of Article 4 of the Constitution, as amended by the electors on the first Tuesday of November, 1854, and adjourned on Saturday, the twenty-sixth day of March, following, to meet again in Newport, on the last Tuesday in May, 1864.

CHAPTER 481.

AN ACT DIVIDING THE TOWN OF NORTH PROVIDENCE INTO Passed Mar. DISTRICTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF VOTING.

3, 1864.

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows :

SECTION 1. The town of North Providence is hereby divided into three districts for the purpose of balloting for Representatives to Congress, Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General and General Treasurer, and Town Clerk, Town Council, Town Treasurer, Justices of the Peace, and also Senators and Representatives to the General Assembly, to be designated and bounded as follows, viz:

All that part of the town comprising the school districts numbers one, two and nine shall be called District No. 1.

tricts umber nthree, four, seven and ten shall be called District No. 2.

That part of said town comprising the school districts number five, six and eight shall be called District No. 3.

Sec. 2. The Town Council of said town shall and may hereafter at their next meeting, after their annual election, choose and elect so many town officers as by law of the State are or shall be required, excepting such as are directed by this act to be otherwise elected.

Sec. 3. The district clerks shall receive from the town the same compensation as Town Clerks are entitled to receive for similar services.

Sec. 4. No town meeting shall be held in said town on the first Wednesday of April next, other than the district meetings, as hereinbefore provided. The annual election of Town Council, Clerk, Treasurer and Justices of the Peace, shall be held on the first Monday of June. No town meeting in said town shall be held in said town on the first Monday of June, other than the district meetings, as hereinbefore provided; but a town meeting of said town shall hereafter be holden annually at the town house in said town, and notified by the Town Clerk in the warrant for said meeting, on the second Monday of June, at ten o'clock a. m., for the transaction of such general business of the town as may legally come before said meeting, and all business of said town in town meeting, which was postponed and continued to the first Wednesday of April next, shall be continued till the second Monday of June next.

Sec. 5. The Town Council elected as herein provided shall consist of seven members, and the said Council shall at some meetiny previous to the annual election determine the number of Justices of the Peace in each voting district to be elected by the people. All the officers of said town shall hereafter be elected according to the provisions of this act. And officers so elected shall have all the authority and be subject to all the duties appertaining by law to their several offices. All officers hereafter elected in said town shall hold

their several offices until their successors are duly
qualified. The present officers of said town shall con-
tinue in office until their successors are duly quali-
fied. Whenever any vacancy hereafter occurs in
any of the offices of said town, that are filled by the
electors of said town, the Town Council may order a
new election, and such election shall be notified and
conducted according to law and the provisions herein
contained; and whenever any vacancy hereafter occurs
in any of the offices that are filled by the Town Coun-
cil of said town, the said Town Council may fill such
vacancy, and the persons so elected by the Council
shall hold their offices until the time of the annual
election of such officers according to the provisions of
this act, and until their successors are duly qualified.

Sec. 6. All acts and parts of acts of the General
Assembly inconsistent herewith are hereby repealed,
but no law applicable to said town of North Provi-
dence is to be changed by this act, except so far as the
same is inconsistent herewith.

Ser. 7. This act shall go into effect immediately
after its passage.
