CHAPTER XXI.

An Act limiting the Time for prefenting Claims for deftroyed Certificates of certain Defcrip

tions.

Section 1. E it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Limitation United States of America, in Congress affembled, That all claims for the renewal of certificates of certain of the unfubfcribed debt of the United States, of the descriptions commonly called "LoanOffice Certificates," or "Final Settlements," which may have been accidentally deftroyed, fhall be forever barred and precluded from fettlement or allowance, unless the fame fhall be prefented at the treafury, on or before the first day of June, in the year one thousand feven hundred and ninety-five.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That no jugs to be claim fhall be allowed for the renewal of loanoffice certificates destroyed before the fourth day of March, one thousand feven hundred and eighty-nine, unless the deftruction of the fame was advertised, according to the refolution of Congrefs, of the tenth day of May, one thoufand feven hundred and eighty; or before that time, was notified to the office from which the fame was iffued, nor fhall claims be allowed for the renewal of loan-office certificates deftroyed on or after the faid fourth day of March, one thoufand feven hundred and eighty-nine, nor of final-fettlement certificates destroyed at any time, unlefs the deftruction of the fame was fo far made public, as to be known to at leaft two credible witneffes, foon after it happened, and fhall have been before the prefentation of the claim, as herein-after provided,

advertised for at least fix weeks fucceffively, in fome one of the newspapers of the state in which the deftruction happened; and also, in fome-one of the newfpapers of the state in which the certificate iffued, if that was another ftate; the advertisement or advertisements, in fuch case, expreffing with as much precision as poffible, the number, date, and amount of the certificate alledged to have been destroyed, and the name of the perfon to whom the fame was iffued, together with the time when, the place where, and the means by which the same was destroyed.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That all elaims for the renewal of destroyed certificates, and how By whom of either of the defcriptions aforefaid, not pre- long to be cluded by this act, fhall be receivable, with the evidence in fupport of the fame, by the Auditor of the Treasury, until the faid firft day of June, one thousand feven hundred and ninety-five, and fhall, by the accounting officers of the Treafury, be duly examined; and if fatisfactorily fupported, the claimants fhall be entitled to receive certificates of registered debt, equal to the fpecie-value of the loan-office or final-fettlement certificates fo proved to have been destroyed.
