SCHOLAR'S LEAFLET.

FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY. THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT.

'And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it.'

To be read. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it; because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.'-Gen. ii. 3.

27. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. 28. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws? 29. See, for that the Lord hath given you the Sabbath, therefore He giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. 30. So the people rested on the seventh day.-Exod. xvi. 27-30.

13. Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily My Sabbaths ye shall keep for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you. 14. Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 16. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.'-Exod. xxxi. 13, 14, 16, 17.

To be learnt' And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.'Acts xx. 7.

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.'-1 Cor. xvi. 2.

→ day of rest and gladness,
O day of joy and light,

O balm of care and sadness,
Most beautiful, most bright;
On thee the high and lowly,
Before the eternal Throne,
Sing Holy, Holy, Holy,

To the great Three in One.
On thee, at the creation,

The light first had its birth;
On thee for our salvation
Christ rose from depths of earth;
On thee our Lord victorious,
The Spirit sent from heaven;
And thus on thee most glorious
A triple light was given.
Thou art a cooling fountain
In life's dry dreary sand;
From thee, like Pisgah's mountain,
We view our promised land;
(Hymns Ancient and Modern, 36.)

A day of sweet refection,

A day of holy love,

A day of resurrection

From earth to things above.
To-day on weary nations
The heavenly manna falls,
To holy convocations

The silver trumpet calls.
Where Gospel light is glowing
With pure and radiant beams,
And living water flowing

With soul-refreshing streams.
New graces ever gaining

From this our day of rest,
We reach the Rest remaining
To spirits of the blest;
To Holy Ghost be praises,

To Father, and to Son;
The Church her voice upraises

To Thee, blest Three in one. Amen.

SCHOLAR'S LEAFLET.

SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.

FOURTH COMMANDMENT (concluded.)

There remaineth therefore a SABBATH rest for the people of God,' To be read. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm; therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day.'-Deut. v. 15.

For in six days the LORD made Heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.'-Exod. xxxi. 17.

Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.'-Exod. xxiii. 12.

'Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is.'-Heb. x. 25.

Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants, every one that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of My covenant;

Even them will "I bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon Mine altar; for Mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people."-Isaiah lvi. 6, 7.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might, He increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fail;

'But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.'-Isaiah xl. 29-31.

To be learnt. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on My holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour Him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.'-Isaiah lviii. 13, 14.
