And they came into the self. country of Moab. and 3 continued, there.g Ge.35.19. 3 And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, 3 were. died; and she was left, and her two sons. h Is.23.7. 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. 5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. La.2.15. 6 Then she arose, with her daughtersin-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited k his people in giving them k Ge.50.25. bread. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them; and they said, Is this h Naomi ? 20 And she said unto them, Call me not 4 Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and the LORD i hath brought me home again empty: why thea call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley-harvest. CHAP. II. AN ND Naomi had a kinsman m of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was 6 Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean o ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. 3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. 4 And, behold, Boaz came from Beth. lehem, and said unto the reapers, p The LORD be with you. And they r answered him, The LORD bless thee. 5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damse is this? 6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: 7 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house. 8 Then said Roaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither w go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens: 9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that Kinaness of Boaz to Ruth. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. m 15 And when she was risen up to glean, Roaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and 6 reproach o her not: 16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. 17 So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. 9.7. 10.19. Ruth's visit to 2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred with whose maidens thou wast? b behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor. 3 Wash thyself, therefore, and d anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. 4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and 1 uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. 5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do. 6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her motherin-law bade her. 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, k he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. 8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and 4 turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. k Ju. 19.6,9,229 And he said, Who art thou? And Naomi said v c.3.10. unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one 9 of our next kinsmen. 21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my your men, until they have ended all my harvest. 22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. THEN Naomi her mother-in-law said a c.3.12. unto her, My daughter, shall bI not b 1Co.7.36. ek rest e for thee, that it may be well IT1.5.8. ...th thee? cc.1.9 12 And now, it is true that I am thy near kinsman; howbeit, q there is a kinsman nearer than I. 13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part r of a kinsman, well, let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as s the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning. 14 And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before oue could know another. And he said, u Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15 Also he said, Bring the 8 vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six mea. sures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city. 16 And when she came to her motherin-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not einpty unto thy mother-in-law. 18 Then said she, Sít y still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day. CHAP. IV. THEN went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman, of whom Boaz spake, a came by: unto whom he said, Ho, such-a-one. turn aside, sit down here. And he turnled aside, and sat down. 189 128.3. 3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the coun-b Ps.127.3. try of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's: c Ge.29 & 30. 4 And I thought to advertise thee, say- I said I will ing, Buy d it before e the inhabitants, reveal in and before the elders of thy people. If thine ear. thou wilt redeem it, redeem it; but if 2 or, get thee thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, riches, or, that I may know: for there is none to power. redeem it besides thee; and I am after d Je.32.8,25. thee. The LORD b make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two cdid build the house of Israel: and 2 do thou worthily in Ephra tah, f and 3 be famous in Beth-lenem 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar g bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman. 13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave h her conception, and she bare a son. 14 And i the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not 4 left thee this day without a 5 kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and 6 a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter-in-law, which loveth thee, which is better m to thee than seven sons, hath borne him. 16 And Nazmi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And n the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez o begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, p and Nahshon begat 8 Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed. 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David. 9 The First Book of SAMUEL, otherwise called The First Book of the KINGS. Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite: 2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 And this man went up out of his city 2 yearly d to worship, and to sacrifice 2 from year unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And to year. the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phined Ex.23.14. has, the priests of the LORD, were there. So the woman went her way, and did eat, a and hei countenance was no more sad. 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered cher. 20 Wherefore it came to pass, 1 when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name 3 Samuel, saying, Be cause I have asked him of the LORD. 21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then 1 will bring him, that he may appear ƒ before the LORD, and there abide for ever. 23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do h what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only k the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bul locks, and one ephah of ficur, and a lot tle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh; and the child was young. 25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, Oh, my lord! as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. 27 For this child I prayed; m and n the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: 28 Therefore also I have 8 lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth 9 he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there. CHAP. II. AND Hannah prayed, and said, & My heart rejoiceth in the LORD; mine horn is exalted t in the LORD; my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice u in thy salvation. 2 There v is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee; neither is there any rock w like our God. 3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let x not 3 arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD y is a God of know. ledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows z of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. 5 They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the b barren hath borne seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 6 The LORD Killeth, c and maketh alive he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 7 The LORD e maketh poor, and maketh 191 Wickedness of Eli's sons.
