CHAPTER XXX.

The Sign of the Prophet Jonah.-The Leaven of the Pharisees.-The Disciples' Second Profession of Faith.-The Sufferings of Jesus and of his Followers Foretold.

a

AND straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came

into the coasts of Magdala 1 in Dalmanutha.

с

And the Pharisees2 also with the Sadducees' came forth, and began to question with him,2 and1 desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven,' tempting him.2

666

He answered and said unto them,

6

"When it is evening, ye say, 'It will be fair weather for the sky is "red.' And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring.' O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face "of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" 1 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith,2

"A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign. Why "doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, there "shall no sign be given unto this generation, but the sign of the "prophet Jonah." 57

1

And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

1

Now the disciples 2 when they were come to the other side, had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more

than one loaf.

66

66

Then Jesus' charged them, saying,*

"Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees,' and of the leaven of Herod."

And they reasoned among themselves, saying,

"It is because we have 2 taken no bread.” 1

m

And 27 when Jesus perceived 1" it 2 he said " unto them,

66

0 ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread ? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, "hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?"

66

66

66

They say unto him,

"Twelve."

"And when the seven 2 loaves 1 among 2 t the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up?"

And they said,

"Seven." 2

"How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you Luke 9. 18-22. concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees "and of the Sadducees?"

Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.1

And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

And he looked up, and said,

"I see men as trees, walking."

After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

And he sent him away to his house, saying,

"Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town." 2

And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Cæsarea Philippi. And it came to pass,3 when Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi; as he was alone by the way,2 praying, his disciples were with him and he asked them,3" saying unto them,

And Simon Peter answered and said11 unto him,2 "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." 1 And Jesus answered and said unto him,

"Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not "revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say "also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my "church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail aganst it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever "thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou "shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

ND it came to pass about an eight" days after these sayings,3 Jesus 1 " took 3* with him Peter, and James, and John 2 his brother,1 and wenty up into a 3* high mountain apart by themselves to pray. And as he prayed he was transfigured before them: and the fashion of his bringeth them. Countenance was altered, and his face did shine as the sun,1 and his lendeth them.2 raiment became shining exceeding white and glistering as the light,16 so as no fuller on earth can white them.2 And, behold, there talked © with him two men, which were Moses and 3 Elijah : 5f who appeared unto them' in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him," Peter 3 answered and said 2 unto Jesus,

While he thus" spake,3 behold, there came a bright cloud,' and Matt. 17.5-16. overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And, behold,' there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son,3 in whom I am well pleased; hear ye "him."

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said,

"Arise, and be not afraid."1

And suddenly when the voice was past,3 and they had lifted up their eyes,' and looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves."

And as they came down from the mountain,2 Jesus charged them, saying,

5

"Tell the vision to no man,' nor what things 2 ye have 5 seen,2 until "the Son of man be risen again from the dead."1

And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

And his disciples' asked him, saying,

Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.1

And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.3

And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, he came to his disciples,2 and 2 he saw a great multitude

And when they were come to the multitude,' he asked the scribes, "What question ye with them ?" 2

3

And behold, there came to him a certain man,' one of the multitude,2 t who kneeling down to him,' cried out 3 and 5 answered, and said,"

Jesus said unto him,

"If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul" spirit," saying unto him,

"Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him."

:

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, "He is dead."
