Hymn.

HROUGH the night of doubt and sorrow,

Toward goes the pilgrim band,

Singing songs of expectation,

Marching to the Promised Land. And before us through the darkness Gleameth clear the guiding Light; Brother clasps the hand of brother, And steps fearless through the night.

One the Light of GOD's dear Presence,
Never in its work to fail,
Which illumes the wild rough places
Of this gloomy haunted vale.
One the object of our journey,
One the faith which never tires,
One the earnest looking forward,
One the hope our GOD inspires.

One the strain which mouths of thousands
Lift as from the heart of one;
One the conflict, one the peril,
One the march in GOD begun,
One the gladness of rejoicing
On the Resurrection shore,
With One FATHER o'er us shining
In His love for evermore.

Go we onward, pilgrim brothers,
Visit first the Cross and grave,
Where the Cross its shadow flingeth,
Where the boughs of cypress wave.
Then-a shaking as of earthquakes,
Then a rending of the tomb,
Then a scattering of all shadows,
And an end of toil and gloom.

Dccasional Prayers.

These Occasional Prayers are arranged to meet special wants, particular states of life, different kinds of temptation, seasons of sorrow or suffering.

Use whichever of them suits the particular need you feel on any occasion.

Try to get into the way of going to God about everything; these Prayers will help you at first in doing so, by giving you words in which to express your wants to Him. You know how

strong the habits of common life are; try to acquire habits of religion; endeavour to mix up the thought of God with everything you say, or do, or think; with your work, your sorrows, your joys, your temptations, so that the thought of God may become natural to you, and you may turn to Him as a Father, at all times, and under all circumstances of life.

Pray to Him about everything, and lay all your difficulties before Him, difficulties through being out of work, through illness, through the company you are thrown into, or in the uncertainty of making up your mind about your business, or about entering into any new state of life; in all, and everything, go to God and ask His counsel.

Above all do not be afraid of Him, but trust Him and He will never fail you.

SEN

A Prayer for Power over Sin.

END down, O LORD, the Spirit of Power into our hearts, and enable us to subdue our unruly passions, to mortify our lusts and desires, and to deny ourselves; that what Thou determinest may be our choice, and Thy will be the rule of all our actions. Let Thy HOLY SPIRIT so assist us, O Most Gracious FATHER, that we

may not only fight against sin, but gain the victory over it; for JESUS CHRIST's sake, Who fought and conquered for us. Amen.

O

A Prayer for Repentance.

LORD, Who hast called me to repentance by Thy Word, call me also by Thy grace, but call me so powerfully that I may not turn a deaf ear, and that I may not resist Thy call. I bring my sins to Thee, that Thou mayest enable me to give them up, and strengthen me with a full purpose, through Thy grace, never to return to them again, through JESUS CHRIST our LORD. Amen.

A Prayer for the Forgiveness of Sin.

MY GOD, I confess that I have done many

and grievous things against Thy laws and my own good resolutions. Instead of amending and forsaking my sins, I have added greatly to their number. Though Thou wert once pleased to wash and sanctify me, I have defiled myself anew with greater and more inexcusable sins. Hearken now, O LORD, to my cry, look down and behold my misery; O save me for Thy mercies' sake, have compassion upon Thy child, though she be rebellious and full of transgression. Consider, therefore, O my LORD and FATHER, that though I am a sinner, I am still Thy child; I cannot cease to be so, for Thou art the Author and Giver, not only of my natural, but also of my

spiritual life.

Thou hast declared that Thou wilt not forget Thy children; forget not me, then, O my FATHER.

I confess, O LORD, that I am a sinner, a great and grievous sinner; my conscience reproaches me with guilt continually. What shall I do? and whither shall I flee but unto Thee? And therefore I take shelter in Thy mercy alone, in that mercy which can never be overpowered by any greatness or number of offences.

Under the shelter of this mercy I dare approach the throne of grace; and thus protected and encouraged, I run, I call, I cry for pardon, and knock again and again till Thou open and take pity on me.

Arise, O LORD, I beseech Thee, and say unto my soul," I am thy Salvation." Raise me, then, and quicken me, O LORD my GOD, that for the future I may serve Thee, live to Thee, and utterly devote myself to Thee. Accept me, I implore Thee, and draw me to Thyself, that may be Thine by obedience and love, as I am already Thine by Creation and Redemption, and hear and answer my prayers, for the sake of JESUS CHRIST our LORD and SAVIOUR. Amen.

STR

A Prayer for Spiritual Strength.

TRENGTHEN me, O LORD, by the grace of Thy HOLY SPIRIT. Break in pieces those temptations which violently assault me. Fight Thou strongly for me, and vanquish the alluring
